Position Summary
San Diego State University is seeking a skilled and dependable Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to support the maintenance, repair, installation, and preventive care of campus HVAC and mechanical systems. This role helps ensure safe, reliable, and efficient building operations through hands-on maintenance, emergency response, and renovation support.
Key Responsibilities- Maintenance, Repair & Emergency HVAC Work
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment, plumbing systems, cooling towers, pumps, motors, and related mechanical components.
- Respond to service requests and emergency calls by restoring air flow, temperature, humidity, and repairing utility distribution systems.
- Perform routine component replacements, adjustments, and minor repairs to maintain system reliability.
- Renovation & Preventive Maintenance
- Assist with HVAC renovations and equipment installations, including piping, ductwork, wiring, thermostats, and related systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, and troubleshooting to maximize equipment performance and minimize downtime.
- Support HVAC system upgrades and maintenance projects under the direction of journey‑level staff.
- Trades & Mechanical Room Support
- Assist journey‑level trades personnel with maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction projects.
- Perform general maintenance and minor interior and exterior repairs as assigned.
- Maintain mechanical rooms, utility systems, and related equipment to support safe and efficient operations.
- Support essential campus HVAC and mechanical systems.
- Gain hands‑on experience working alongside skilled trades professionals.
- Contribute to safe, reliable, and efficient campus facilities.

- This is a full‑time (1.0 time‑base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
- This position is designated non‑exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 200 employees (full time and students) and supports approximately 8 million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land.
The Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is a self‑funded operation responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing operations, services, and facilities with over 100 employees and more than 150 student assistants.
