LXD Manager

Position within the Academy for Professional Excellence, a project of San Diego State University School of Social Work established in 1996 to revolutionize work practices for a healthier world. The Academy provides approximately 50,000 learning experiences annually for health and human service professionals, with seven programs and over 100 staff. Its mission is to transform individuals, organizations, and communities through exceptional learning.

Overview

The opening salary for this position is $9,077.00 – $10,298.00 per month and is non‑negotiable. It is a 40‑hour‑per‑week hybrid role with remote flexibility and is based on contract funding subject to annual renewal. The typical schedule is Monday‑Friday 8:00 – 4:30 p.m.; overtime, overnight travel, evenings and weekends may be required. Applicants must be California residents throughout employment and live within a commutable distance from the Riverside or San Diego office.

Some duties may involve sensitive or traumatic topics such as child abuse or mental health.

Responsibilities

The Learning Experience Design Manager directs and executes the Academy’s asynchronous learning products, ensuring projects are well‑planned, delivered on time, and aligned with organizational goals. The role includes full lifecycle management of digital learning products, maintaining systems and workflows, coaching the LXD team, and maintaining alignment with broader organizational priorities.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE DESIGN STRATEGY AND ORGANIZATIONAL INFLUENCE (15%)
  • Develop, implement, and manage LXD strategic plans to enhance systems and processes aligned with business goals.
  • Establish consistent reporting to inform strategic decisions and improve efficiency.
  • Partner with the Workforce Management and Development Team to ensure curriculum standards reflect best practices.
  • Present research, solutions, and prototypes to leaders and stakeholders.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS (25%)
  • Maintain a transparent, agile project management system for asynchronous products.
  • Manage production queue, workload planning, and collaboration across teams.
  • Facilitate regular planning meetings and communicate updates.
  • Coordinate with service providers and oversee contract deliverables.
  • Act as point of contact for escalated issues.
ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING PRODUCT DESIGN (20%) Digital Learning Product Design and Content Development
  • Design, write, and revise accessible eLearnings and microlearnings applying adult learning theory and universal design.
  • Build self‑paced products with Articulate Storyline, Rise, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Interpret and refine learning objectives.
  • Develop storyboards, produce narration, and program modules.
  • Upload and test courses to the LMS.
  • Assess SME content and drive enhancements with culturally responsive exercises.
  • Create comprehensive storyboards with scripts, interactions, animations, and checks.
Media Production and Technical Delivery
  • Produce, edit, and caption voiceover narration for courses.
  • Produce and edit audiovisual content and integrate sound design.
  • Publish and upload SCORM files to the LMS.
Quality Assurance and Accessibility
  • Conduct QA and accessibility testing including NVDA screen‑reader and keyboard navigation.
  • Participate in Internal Review/Quality Control process.
  • Integrate feedback and prepare alpha versions for partner review.
SUPERVISION, COACHING, AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT (20%)
  • Provide direct supervision to LXD Team Supervisors, supporting leadership and skill development.
  • Assist with hiring, evaluation, and performance management.
  • Lead team health, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Engage LXD in relational team building and professional development.
  • Nurture and leverage individual skills to deliver innovative learning experiences.
ACADEMY LEADERSHIP AND COLLABORATION (15%)
  • Engage in personal skill development as a leader.
  • Collaborate with Division Leadership for strategic planning.
  • Maintain relationships with people leaders and provide updates on operations.
  • Participate on the Shared Leadership Team.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED (5%)
  • Perform duties beneficial to the Academy.
