Position Overview
Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is looking to add an Embedded & Real Time Software Engineer/Principal Embedded & Real Time Software Engineer to join the Software organization. The role will be supported on‑site in San Diego, CA, Palmdale, CA, or El Segundo, CA. The incumbent will design, develop, integrate, and test software (SW) for end‑user customers and businesses, and will be responsible for the design, architecture, development, and administration of embedded and real‑time systems.
The position requires a Top Secret clearance and may provide relocation assistance. Travel (10% of the time) is expected. Start dates are determined after funding confirmation.
- Work in a fast‑paced environment with high expectations, diverse assignments, and collaborative team settings across all levels.
- Participate in the full SW development life cycle including requirements, design, implementation, qualification, and delivery of SW products to customers.
- Operate in an embedded technology development environment, working with real‑time operating systems for flight and mission‑critical systems.
- Work in Agile Scrum teams to develop SW products for multiple SW baselines.
Basic Qualifications:
- Level2:
Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline and 2 years of related engineering experience; or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and entry‑level related engineering experience. - Level3:
Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline and 5 years of related engineering experience; or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of related engineering experience; or a PhD in a STEM discipline and 1 year of related engineering experience. - Experience with the full SW Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
- Experience with C, C++, and Python.
- Experience with at least two of:
Jira, Crucible, Bitbucket, Subversion, Bamboo, Jenkins, Sonarqube, Fortify, or Coverity. - Experience with Agile SW development, embedded system programming, SW integration, and testing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to interface with all levels of employees and management.
- Ability to collaborate with systems engineers, hardware designers, and integration/test engineers to develop and maintain complex SW systems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government Top Secret clearance and any required program access within a reasonable time.
- Ability to obtain and maintain initial Special Program Access (SAP/PAR) before employment and upgrade it thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current applicable SAP access.
- Recent experience with C++ SW running on real‑time operating systems such as VxWorks, Integrity, and/or Real‑Time Embedded Linux.
- Experience developing multi‑threaded SW for flight‑critical, safety‑critical, medical, or mission‑critical applications.
- Familiarity with at least two data interfaces: 1553, 1394, 422, 429, serial, CAN, discrete & analog I/O, Ethernet/IP, or Fibre Channel.
- Basic understanding of PowerPC or ARM assembly and ability to read assembly code to understand behaviors.
- Ability to identify moderate execution defects by reading code alone.
- Understanding of how embedded SW components fit into larger SW systems/architectures.
- Ability to document, capture, and present software architectural components in modeling or diagramming tools.
- Familiarity with OS partitions and isolation architectures.
- High‑level understanding of architectural requirements for airworthiness certifications.
- Recent experience with SW change control, change management, static analysis, and CI/CD tools such as Atlassian suite, Jira, Git Hub, Git Lab, Sonar Qube, Coverity, and/or Jenkins within the last three years.
- Experience with static & dynamic code analysis.
- Strong understanding of layered SW architectures, hardware interfaces, event‑driven, polling, and synchronous SW architectures.
