MWR Recreation Assistant; Lifeguard

Summary

This is a developmental lifeguard position comprised of three levels:

• Level 1 – NF‑01 Lifeguard Trainee
  : entry–level role for individuals without current certifications. Training must be completed within 30 days of hire.
• Level 2 – NF‑01 Lifeguard
  : responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons, enforcing pool rules, administering first aid, performing routine chemical testing, and housekeeping duties.
• Level 3 – NF‑02 Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor (WSI): in addition to Level 2 duties, this level instructs swimming classes, manages attendance and progress reporting, and performs all safety monitoring responsibilities.

• Level 1 (Trainee):
  Complete required lifeguard, CPR, and first‑aid training within 30 days. Assist higher‑level staff but perform no lifeguarding duties until certified.
• Level 2 (Lifeguard): safeguard patrons, enforce rules, perform rescues, administer first aid, conduct chemical and temperature checks, perform housekeeping and minor maintenance, open/close facility, and complete daily task logs.
• Level 3 (LSI): conduct swimming instruction and safety training, maintain attendance records, enforce safety, assist in emergency response, perform routine pool testing and housekeeping, supervise opening/closing duties, and maintain certifications.

• Must pass E‑Verify and meet federal suitability requirements, including a background investigation.
• Work is performed indoors and outdoors with irregular hours; early, late, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be required.
• Level 1 trainees must obtain lifeguard training, CPR for the Professional, and Standard First Aid within 30 days.
• May be required to lift or carry swimmers and respond to emergencies at all times.

• Level 1 (Trainee):
  • Pass a 300‑yard swim and 20‑yard swim while carrying a 10‑lb object.
  • Perform 2‑minute tread‑water test.
  • Complete a rescue drill involving a 10‑lb object in 1 minute 40 seconds.
• Level 2 (Lifeguard):
  • Certified in Lifeguard Training/CPR Professional (Title 22) and Standard First Aid.
  • Pass skills and written tests; swim 300 yards.
  • Demonstrate emergency assessment, communication, rule enforcement, and public‑relations skills.
• Level 3 (Lifesaver/WSI):
  • Certified as above, plus pass skills and written tests; swim 500 yards.
  • Instruct basic strokes, water‑safety, emergency response, self‑survival, and life support.
  • Maintain knowledge of hazardous‑material handling and use of personal protective equipment.

• Level 1:
  None required.
• Level 2:
  Lifeguard Training, CPR Professional, Standard First Aid.
• Level 3:
  Same as Level 2 plus Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.

All employees must be drug‑free in accordance with Executive Order 12564. Background checks are required as outlined in DoDI 1402.05. Non‑U.S. citizens with fewer than three years of recent U.S. residency may be ineligible. New hires must complete a one‑year probationary period and enroll in Direct Deposit within 30 days. Eligibility for Federal employment is verified through E‑Verify and the U.S. immigration system.
