Job TitleAfter-School Bus Driver
Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Program Director of the Family and Youth Enrichment department, the School Bus Driver is primarily responsible for safely operating the school bus on an on‑call basis depending on the needs of Armed Services YMCA San Diego programs and events. The School Bus Driver must ensure the bus is in good operating condition, conduct daily safety and maintenance checks, pick up and drop off students according to schedule, maintain order and security on the bus, and obey all laws, regulations and rules of conduct.
The driver must also provide courteous service to residents and the public, handle complaints about schedules and service quality, and respond in a respectful manner.
- Operate the school bus safely and efficiently, minimizing risk of injury or loss.
- Conduct daily safety and maintenance inspections.
- Perform minor maintenance duties such as fueling, lubricating, checking fluid levels.
- Clean the bus as scheduled.
- Ensure the bus is securely stored.
- Advise Senior Administrative Officer of maintenance or repair needs.
- Maintain schedules and enforce order on the school bus.
- Pick up and deliver students per the schedule.
- Keep a daily student count.
- Educate students on rules, responsibilities and emergency procedures.
- Maintain discipline on the bus.
- Document any behavioral or disciplinary issues.
This position may provide information to donors, potential donors, program participants, volunteers, partners, ASYMCA SD Board and staff, and others from the community.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesNo supervisory responsibilities.
Education / Years of ExperienceAt least two years of school bus driving experience with a school district or youth organization (e.g., YMCA & Boys & Girls Club). Mandatory twenty hours of classroom instruction and twenty hours of behind‑the‑wheel bus training. Equivalent combinations of education and work experience may qualify.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of California highway and school bus law and regulations.
- Experience working with regularly educated children and children with special needs.
- Knowledge of school bus equipment cleaning standards and procedures.
- Professional demeanor with analytical thinking and problem‑solving aptitude.
- Responsible, organized, and initiative‑driven.
- Accurate and detail oriented; strong organizational and time‑management skills, able to juggle multiple priorities.
- Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.

Standard office equipment and machines, such as telephone, computer, copier, and calculator. School bus dashboard control center, bus engine compartment, and overall unit knowledge.
Licenses / CertificationsClass C Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Current CPR/First Aid Certificate and Medical Examiner’s Health Certificate. Reliable transportation, satisfactory driving record, personal vehicle insurance coverage, and insurability under the organization’s insurance carrier standards.
Physical, Mental & Environmental Requirements- Work in an office setting with frequent travel within San Diego County.
- Sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel and use hands, arms, and legs for dexterity, balance and climbing stairs frequently; may sit for prolonged periods.
- Occasionally lift, carry, and balance objects up to 30 pounds.
- Perform pre‑trip inspection: check engine compartment, interior and exterior for damage and hazards; operate and troubleshoot emergency exits, doors and seats.
- Prioritize and multitask tasks requiring good memory, concentration and analytical thinking.
- Work in all weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat.
- Perform safe operation of office equipment and recognize safety hazards within the workplace.
