Under the direction of the Program Director of the Family and Youth Enrichment department, the School Bus Driver is primarily responsible for safely operating the school bus on an on‑call basis depending on the needs of Armed Services YMCA San Diego programs and events. The school bus driver must ensure that the bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the scheduled timetable, maintain order and security on the bus, and obey all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct.
The driver must also deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving and addressing complaints about schedules, quality of service, and any other concerns. Complaints must be noted, reported, and handled respectfully and professionally.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following duties and responsibilities are those considered to be essential but do not represent all job functions that may be required to be performed by this position. Evening and weekend work may be required.
- Operate the school bus in a safe and effective manner to minimize risk of injury, property damage or loss of life.
- Operate the school bus efficiently according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
- Perform minor maintenance duties such as fueling, lubricating the engine, checking fluid levels, and other duties as assigned.
- Clean the bus as scheduled and/or required.
- Ensure the bus is safely and securely stored.
- Advise the Senior Administrative Officer of any maintenance or repair requirements.
- Maintain schedules and order on the school bus.
- Pick up and deliver students as per the set schedule.
- Keep a daily student count on board.
- Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities, including emergency evacuation procedures.
- Maintain order and discipline on the school bus.
- Document any behavioral or disciplinary problems.
This position may provide information to donors, potential donors, program participants, volunteers, partners, ASYMCA SD Board, staff, and others from the community.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesNo supervisory responsibilities.
Education / Years of ExperienceMinimum:
At least two years of school bus driving for a school district or another youth‑related organization (e.g., YMCA, Boys & Girls Club). Mandatory twenty hours of classroom instruction and twenty hours of behind‑the‑wheel bus training. Any combination of educational and work experience that is equivalent to the stated minimum requirements qualifies for consideration.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of California highway and school bus law and regulations.
- Knowledge of how to work with regular education children and children with special needs.
- Knowledge of school bus equipment cleaning standards and procedures.
- Professional demeanor with an aptitude for analytical thinking and problem solving.
- Responsible, well‑organized, and demonstrative of initiative.
- Accurate, detail‑oriented with strong organizational and time‑management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a complex, fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Proven track record of success.

Licenses / CertificationsThe position requires a Class C Commercial Driver’s License with the Passenger Endorsement issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, a current CPR / First Aid Certificate, and a Medical Examiner’s Health Certificate.
