Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all-gender college-preparatory school for approximately 800 students in grades six through twelve. The School is located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond.

The Bishop’s School seeks School Bus and Van Drivers with immediate start.

Reporting to the Director of Transportation, school van and bus drivers are responsible for providing safe, reliable, and professional transportation for students to and from school, athletic competitions, field trips, and other school-sponsored activities as needed.

Temporary and longer-term positions are available. On-call drivers are also needed. Hours will vary based on the School’s transportation needs and may include early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, field trips, athletic events, and other school-sponsored activities. On-call drivers may be contacted to cover scheduled or unexpected absences and should have flexibility to accept assignments as needed.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Safely transport students to and from school, athletic events, field trips, and other school-sponsored activities.
  • Follow all federal, state, and local traffic laws, California Highway Patrol regulations, and School transportation policies.
  • Ensure the safety of students during loading, transportation, and unloading, including assisting students as needed when boarding and exiting the bus.
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior while enforcing School transportation rules and reporting concerns to the Director of Transportation.
  • Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles, including inspections of brakes, tires, lights, fluid levels, steering, suspension, safety equipment, heating and cooling systems, and other components as required by law.
  • Immediately report vehicle issues, safety concerns, or maintenance needs to the Director of Transportation.
  • Maintain established transportation schedules and complete assigned routes in a timely manner.
  • Review assigned routes and directions before operating regular routes, field trips, athletic trips, and other special assignments.
  • Refuel assigned vehicles whenever the fuel level falls below one-half tank.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, collisions, or student medical situations, including evacuating students safely when necessary and completing required documentation.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with students, parents, faculty, staff, and other members of the School community.
  • Attend required safety meetings, training sessions, and certification renewal courses.
  • Complete daily vehicle inspection, maintenance, mileage, and transportation reports accurately and on time.
  • Accurately check students in and maintain daily passenger manifest logs.
  • Perform other transportation-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED strongly preferred.
  • California Driver's License required.
  • Valid California Commercial Driver's License (Class

    B) with School Bus Certificate and Passenger Endorsement required.
  • Valid T-01 School Bus Driver Certificate required.
  • Minimum of one year of school bus driving experience strongly preferred.
  • Two years of experience working with children preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Basic proficiency with Google Workspace and the ability to learn transportation, scheduling, and communication systems.
  • Secure communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to complete assigned routes safely and on schedule.
  • Clean driving record;
    No traffic citations or at-fault traffic accidents within past five years.
  • Current Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Certificate required.
  • Ability to meet and maintain all commercial driver's license medical requirements, including vision and hearing standards.
  • Successful completion of the California Highway Patrol written First Aid Test or possession of a current First Aid Card.
