Logistics Specialist
The Logistics Specialist supports shipping and receiving operations by handling both physical and administrative tasks related to inbound and outbound materials. This role manages the receipt, documentation, and distribution of goods, acts as a company courier for mail and packages, and assists with packaging outbound freight. The position works closely with laboratories and internal teams to ensure accurate, timely, and safe movement of materials, including chemicals, hazardous materials, and laboratory equipment.
Responsibilities- Receive all incoming goods, verify accuracy against packing slips, and prepare items for delivery to internal recipients.
- Enter all relevant receiving information into electronic tracking and receiving systems in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain up-to-date receiving files and follow up with the Purchasing Department regarding receiving discrepancies or issues, as directed by the supervisor.
- Act as a company courier by delivering and picking up interoffice mail and packages on a regular, assigned schedule.
- Assist with packaging outbound freight for transfer to carriers, couriers, and brokers, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
- Handle day-to-day deliveries by collecting Fed Ex, UPS, and other carrier shipments, opening packages, logging contents, and retaining packing slips.
- Box and deliver packages to internal recipients, log packing slips, and track shipments as needed.
- Interact regularly with scientists and other internal stakeholders to coordinate deliveries, returns, and special shipping needs.
- Unload equipment and notify the equipment team via collaboration tools (such as Microsoft Teams) when new equipment arrives.
- Update team members on delivery date changes, delays, or issues to support accurate planning and coordination.
- Work collaboratively with another logistics consultant, demonstrating a team mindset and providing coverage as needed.
- Work with laboratories to distribute, ship, and receive materials such as chemicals, laboratory equipment, lab glassware, and consumables.
- Apply knowledge of safety protocols when receiving and shipping chemicals and hazardous materials to ensure compliance and safe handling.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in all logistics and storage areas.
- Follow standard operating procedures for shipping, receiving, and handling laboratory-related materials.
- Operate or support operation of material handling equipment, including forklifts, once trained and certified.
- Lift and move materials weighing up to a minimum of 40 pounds as part of daily operations.
- Perform other logistics, shipping, receiving, and courier duties as assigned by leadership.
- 2 to 3 years of on-site lab or logistics work experience, including shipping and receiving responsibilities.
- Experience working in environments that handle chemicals, laboratory materials, or hazardous materials.
- Basic computer skills to support operation of tracking applications and related systems.
- Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel with basic fluency.
- Understanding of internal and external shipping and receiving guidelines and procedures.
- Knowledge of safety protocols related to receiving and shipping chemicals and hazardous materials.
- Ability to work safely around hazardous materials and in laboratory-adjacent environments.
- Sound verbal and written communication skills to interact with scientists, internal teams, and external carriers.
- Customer service mindset with the ability to interact professionally and helpfully with internal stakeholders.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds and perform physical tasks associated with shipping and receiving.
- Valid driver's license.
- Willingness to drive and operate a forklift, with training and certification provided.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures and maintain accurate records for shipping and receiving activities.
- High School Diploma or equivalent degree.
Skills & Qualifications
- Pharmaceutical or hazardous material handling experience is a strong plus.
- Previous forklift operation experience, with the ability to become forklift certified.
- Experience working within laboratory environments or supporting laboratory operations.
- Familiarity with packaging outbound freight for carriers, couriers, and brokers.
- Comfort using collaboration tools, such as Microsoft Teams, to communicate delivery updates and equipment notifications.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for maintaining receiving files and tracking documentation.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and provide coverage for colleagues as needed.
- High School Diploma (or equivalent) combined with 2 to 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Interest in a longer-term opportunity with potential for renewal.
