The OpportunityReporting directly to the Controller, the Assistant Controller plays a critical role in safeguarding the organization's financial integrity. This is not a purely supervisory position – it’s a leadership role for someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves to help shape processes, structures, and financial clarity.
You’ll help oversee the accounting operations of a $50M nonprofit, lead the close process, support audits, strengthen internal controls, and ensure compliance with complex government funding requirements.
You will also serve as the Controller’s right hand – stepping in when needed and helping elevate the finance function.
Compensation and BenefitsThe pay range we’re offering is $100,000 - $110,000 annually.
What You’ll Be Responsible For- Leading monthly and year-end close processes
- Preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements
- Overseeing grant accounting, restricted funds, and contract billing
- Supporting annual audits and serving as a key liaison to external auditors
- Ensuring compliance with GAAP and OMB Uniform Guidance
- Strengthening internal controls and improving accounting processes
- Supervising and mentoring accounting staff
- Supporting budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Preparing reports for executive leadership and the Board
This role requires someone who understands both the technical precision of accounting and the operational reality of a growing nonprofit organization.
Who You Are- A Senior Accountant ready for your first Assistant Controller role
- An Accounting Manager looking for broader exposure and leadership
- A CPA who wants meaningful work in a mission-driven organization
- A nonprofit accounting professional who enjoys complexity and problem-solving
- Technically strong in GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting
- Comfortable working with large datasets and advanced Excel
- Experienced in managing full-cycle accounting
- Detail-oriented but able to see the bigger financial picture
- Comfortable holding high standards for yourself and others
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
- CPA strongly preferred
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Nonprofit accounting experience required
- Experience with $20M+ organizations strongly preferred
- Experience with SAGE 100 or similar ERP systems preferred
