Position: Building Maintenance Aide (Part-Time)

General Statement of Duties

Plans, directs, schedules, oversees, and/or performs the most complex and/or large public works maintenance projects; provides a variety of administrative support duties to assist a maintenance supervisor with infrastructure and/or wastewater maintenance activities and processes for the Surface Maintenance Team; work frequently involves multiple crews performing activities that require a high level of skills and independent decision-making; participates and performs the full range of advanced skilled craft maintenance and repair activities as needed.

  • Plans, directs, and schedules maintenance activities to meet applicable Federal, State, and local regulations, industrial standards, and project specifications; performs full range of skilled journey level construction, maintenance, and repair for the Surface Maintenance Team.
  • Evaluates complex work projects and prioritizes activities; decides on and estimates time, materials, and required processes; prioritizes, plans, and develops assignments for personnel and equipment; ensures proper tools, equipment and supplies are available.
  • Assists with planning and development of budgets; develops estimates and cost‑outs for projects; tracks and monitors expenditures.
  • Assists with the development of policies and standards for assigned maintenance programs; provides input to long‑range planning objectives; researches and designs new processes; develops and implements work procedures and standards related to the assigned area(s); researches and recommends methods, materials, tools, and equipment to improve operations; tests new equipment, materials, and processes; recommends modifications.
  • Develops and writes work orders; assigns priorities, plans, schedules, and coordinates a variety of work projects; makes field crew assignments and delegates responsibilities; develops timelines and plans; coordinates resources, equipment, and materials; coordinates work with other Divisions and crews.
  • Interprets drawings, diagrams, specifications, and blueprints; provides technical assistance to staff as required; sets and interprets standards and issues; develops recommendations/options; resolves onsite field problems; recommends and develops work procedures and standards.
  • Monitors work process, equipment performance, and effectiveness of procedures to ensure that objectives are met; evaluates work product(s) and ensures accuracy of work and that all work performed meets City’s standards; informs supervisor of work process and problems; recommends changes and improvements.
  • Inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with applicable safety standards and City procedures and standards; ensures that proper traffic control devices and procedures are used for safe working conditions and public safety at a job site.
  • Provides coaching, training, and instruction in construction techniques, use and care of equipment and tools, and safety procedures; operates and trains others in the use of specialized equipment and tools; reviews the work of crew members as to standards; assesses skill development of crew members; provides input to performance reviews; participates in the selection process; may develop training exercises for tasks and equipment operations.
  • Maintains records and prepares spreadsheets and reports on project activities, equipment maintenance, and cost factors; ensures all appropriate materials, equipment, and supplies are in inventory and ready; tracks preventive maintenance.
  • Reviews record keeping and documentation to ensure proper project documentation and compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, codes, regulations and ordinances.
  • Coordinates work activities with staff, internal and external customers, contractors, vendors, and the public; may develop contract specifications for bids and oversee work performed by contractors.
  • Develops specifications; meets with vendors; inspects contractors’ work; researches new products and equipment; makes recommendations for equipment acquisitions.
