Overview

An Experienced Manager in BDO’s Partnerships group is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives and various partnership-specific items including but not limited to section 704(b) and taxable income allocations, capital account maintenance, liability analysis and allocations, section 734(b) and 743(b) adjustment calculations, and Tax Receivable Agreement (TRA) calculations. The role applies knowledge and experience to understand potential partnership taxation issues and assists in the preparation of partnership-specific computations.

The Experienced Manager is a key member of the leadership team of the Partnership Practice, actively participating in development of the group, process improvement, and team-building initiatives, maintaining client relationships, and guiding other team members.

Job Duties
  • Tax Specialization:
    Maintains and develops an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding partnership taxation.
  • Research:
    Identifies when research is needed; frames issues clearly; reports analyses concisely; identifies complex issues for the engagement team and provides research methodology; trains associates on research skills; involves firm specialists as appropriate.
  • Tax Consulting:
    Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes; applies tax knowledge and business/industry understanding to recommend solutions; manages client expectations; implements applicable Firm strategies.
  • Tax Specialization:
    Develops an in-depth understanding of partnership taxation; may participate in organizing and conducting external CPE training sessions at least once per year; other duties as required.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Supervises and reviews work of associates and senior associates; trains on software tools; acts as a career advisor; manages workload; provides feedback.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; preferred focus in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics.
  • Master’s Degree in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
  • Six or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required; specialized partnership experience required; supervisory experience preferred.
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or EA (or equivalent) preferred.
  • Strong communication, analytical, research, and decision-making skills; ability to work in a team and develop/manage a team of tax professionals; ability to maintain client relationships; strong organizational skills; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
Experience
  • Six (6) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required.
  • Specialized partnership experience required; prior supervisory experience preferred; private equity experience (fund and portfolio company levels) preferred.
Licenses/Certifications
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or EA (or equivalent) preferred.
  • Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
Software
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred; experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
