Senior Accountant

The Senior Accountant is a key member of the Fund’s finance team, responsible for day‑to‑day accounting, payroll, benefits, and financial reporting. The role offers a growth opportunity for an organized, detail‑oriented professional who wants to contribute to the Fund’s mission.

Position Summary

The Senior Accountant manages all Fund payments, oversees payroll, employee benefits, and personnel records, reconciles bank accounts, fixed assets, and other balance sheet‐related items, and supports forecasting, budget monitoring, and regulatory compliance. The position reports to the Controller and works closely with finance leadership to ensure robust financial systems and controls.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
  • Process semi‑monthly payroll, including uploads of employee hours, status changes, and payroll reporting, while maintaining the payroll manual.
  • Act as the primary contact for Paychex, troubleshooting staff inquiries regarding timecards, PTO balances, and benefit payments.
  • Assist with pension and benefit plan administration, including upgrades to HR and payroll systems.
  • Maintain the contractor file: review contracts and W‑9s, monitor contract spending, and file 1099s and DE542s.
  • Manage accounts payable and grants payable via the Fund’s online payment platform (), and maintain the master file of vendor payment details.
  • Document all payable processes, design and implement process improvements, and upgrade payable systems.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts in Quick Books.
  • Assist in month‑end closing and reporting, including bank statement reconciliations and preparation of journal entry files.
  • Account for fixed assets: capitalization, depreciation, and disposals.
  • Prepare required tax reports and returns, including business property tax and sales and use tax.
  • Produce monthly budget vs. actual reports, variance analysis, and cash‑flow projections for management and Board reporting.
  • Manage the cash drawdown cycle to ensure sufficient liquidity.
  • Support internal controls, system upgrades, and integration with other Fund systems.
  • Assist with regulatory compliance, business continuity planning, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Participate in the annual audit, tax filing, and budget processes and other special projects as required.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Confidentiality and discretion with sensitive information.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or comparable work experience in accounting and Excel.
  • Minimum five years in an accounting department; nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with Quick Books, accounts payable software (preferably ), and CRM database software (preferably Salesforce).
  • High level of Microsoft Office 365 proficiency, especially advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time‑management skills.
  • Detail‑oriented, quality‑focused, and able to investigate and correct errors.
  • Documentation skills: organized filing of electronic and paper documents and ability to produce manuals.
  • Commitment to the Fund’s mission and values, including continuous improvement and technical learning.
  • Analytical, flexible, and solutions‑oriented with ownership of tasks through completion.

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this full‑time position ranges from $80,000 to $90,000, based on experience, credentials, and industry knowledge. Comprehensive benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, an employer‑sponsored 401(a) retirement plan, paid time off, and a hybrid work arrangement (remote and office‑based in the San Francisco Financial District) after the initial remote period.
