Aboutus:

The Department of Building Inspection (DBI) oversees the effective, efficient,fairand safe enforcement of City building, housing, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and disability access codes for San Francisco’s more than 200,000 buildings.

This position islocatedat 49 South Van Ness, San Francisco, CA 94103.

Under direct supervision, the Permit Technician I performs a wide variety of 1st level paraprofessional, technical, administrative and specialized work involved in receiving and reviewing building, electrical, plumbing and related permit applications for completeness; processing records requests; and creating inspection records; making appointments; maintaining field inspection lists; and providing routine permit-related information concerning building permit requirements, codes, ordinances and inspection procedures.

Role

Description:

Schedules inspections, accepts complaints for BID, EID, HIS and PID, and screens and directs calls to Inspections Services staff.

Assist customers in person, by phone and email – duties include identifying customer needs and directing to appropriate staff, and processing payments for a variety of services provided by Inspection Services.

Receives and resolves a variety of routine problems,issuesand complaints; refers complex or misdirected issues to appropriate division and staff.

Supports the Director’s Hearing process - receiving and preparing Notices of Violation, preparing mailings, setting up hearing rooms, and preparing Orders of Abatement.

Reviews and processes applications for boilers, homeowner permits,permitextensions, TCOs, night noise permits etc.

Monitor specialized email accounts and respond as appropriate.

Assist sand interacts with external and internal stakeholders.

Fee collection - calculates, collects, records and balances monetary transactions.

Generates andmaintainsvarious records,documents and data.

Other duties as assigned.

Temp Position Description

Temporary positions are needed for the implementation of the new
Open Gov
permittingsystem and the transition from the old system to the new system. The permitting system affectsnearly all aspects of the Department’s core work. New business processes need to be developed and implemented. These positions will work on testing andvalidatingthe new business processes to ensure customer service is not interrupted.

Example:
In Inspection Services(IS) there is an entirely new inspection scheduling process that requires working in two systems. This takessignificant timeand effort and requires coordination with Inspectors.

Permit Services (PS) specific duties as they relate to the project:
Processing permit applications, issuing permits, and help support Project Coordinator unique to
Open Gov
permittingsystem.

ISspecific duties as they relate to the project:
Scheduling inspection and processing mechanical/boiler permits, special inspections, complaints, notices of violations, and certificates of occupancy.

These minimum qualificationsestablishthe education, training, experience,special skillsand/or license(s) which arerequiredfor employment in the classification.
