Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

About the team:

Compass Behavioral Health Services (CBHS) offers confidential emotional support and therapy for families who are experiencing homelessness, at risk of homelessness, newly housed, or engaged in any other Compass program. Services include on-demand crisis counseling, psychotherapy for individuals and families, children’s play therapy, and therapeutic support groups.

Salary:

$27-$31 per hour

Schedule:

Monday - Friday during standard business hours

Position Description

This position provides childcare and educational activities for Compass children ages 6 months and up while their parents participate in case management and therapy sessions, groups, and other on-site meetings.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Provide direct care and supervision of children while parents attend classes, groups and one-on-one meetings/case management/therapy sessions.
  • Design and lead educational activities for children.
  • Participate in case consultations as needed to discuss the child care experience, address concerns, and communicate with parents and case managers.
  • Administer child and parent/child interactive assessment tools.
  • Maintain and update accurate childcare records and information into the agency database system.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment.
  • Document and report any incidents in child care that affect a child's safety or well‑being, including mandated reports to child protective services when necessary.
  • Support the Compass Family Resource Center team to ensure families have a smooth experience in our drop‑in area, including covering front desk and reception area, supporting community activities and groups, and providing other team support as needed.
Qualifications
  • Fluent Spanish and English required.
  • Two or more years of experience working directly with 0-5 year‑olds required.
  • Must be able to lift a child of 30 lbs.
  • Experience working with people in crisis and demonstrated understanding of issues facing homeless and low‑income families.
  • Ability to assess and deescalate potentially volatile situations.
  • Outstanding work habits: punctual, flexible, reliable, organized, cooperative, strong communicator and team‑oriented.
  • Proficiency with basic computer programs including:
    Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel and internet searches.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
  • TB and fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice, FBI, Child Abuse Index)
  • 12+ units of Early Childhood Education courses encouraged but not required
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary range: $27 - $31 per hour, 7.5 hours per day / 37.5 hours per week. Non‑exempt.
  • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation in your first year, 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.
  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long‑term disability and life insurance.
  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-6.
  • Membership in OPEIU/Local 29 union.
