AFI Graduate Writer/Director/Producer interested in hiring a cinematographer for a non-fiction documentary feature titled Tilting At Windmills:
Fathers Finding their Voices. The documentary will focus on a group divorced fathers preparing to sing a song in protest for their treatment as pro-per litigants to get fair and equal access to their children. The performance will be a single 30 to 60 minute multi-camera event on the steps of a family court building in Martinez, CA.The scope of the project will be:
1. Documenting 4 to 6 rehearsals before the concert which will involve documenting a music director getting this group of nonsingers into shape to perform.
2. Documenting group sessions where these men will be able to attend a group therapy session to getter get to know the men in the group
3. Solo interviews with fathers from the group about their stories , their fight for their children and how they are feeling about being part of this choir formed to perform a single song in front of the a courthouse
4. Solo Interviews with music director as he/she/they get the group into shape, records his/her/their feelings on the concert
5. Sole Interview with a Literature/mythology expert to allow narrative framework as to the use of Don Quixote by movements like this one and how the themes of Cervantes centuries old novel still resonates today.
The single song that will be perfumed will be The impossible Dream from the Man Of La Mancha. so the literature expert and the title Tiltiing at Windmills will help reinforce the fight this group of 25 to 30 men (Finding candidates as we speak) have to get access to their child.
As for my connection to the project, I have been fighting the family court system for three years now and was inspired to do this story because of how alone i have truly felt as a father with no legal representation. Fathers rights is an issue that most don't find important until they are served with divorce papers and their children are ripped from them.
Must have experience on comparable projects. Not expecting you to have won an Emmy or even to have decades of experience. Just want to know you are comfortable and can be a voice of calm and reason on a project that requires great instincts in covering the story.
I want someone who can collaborate with a director so that it can be a partnership based on trust and mutual respect. Know that I'm going to start from that place in any discussion with any candidate.
As i am one of the fathers in this group, I might also need someone to step in as I might be on-camera and not able to direct crew in moments where we want to make sure we are getting the best footage for the project,From a technical perspective, I'm not a camera person and can't tell you what gear I'm looking for.
From a technical perspective, the result I want is to have a documentary that can be entered into the festival circuit and find a distributor.
