Position: Editor for 48Hills

48

Hills is seeking 1‑2 additional Editors for our summer youth film program in San Francisco. This role runs from July 19 – August 14. You’d be joining a small team of 4 editors working directly with students through the full post‑production process of an original narrative short film.

Editors will work in a fast‑moving, professional narrative film environment while mentoring high school students as they learn the creative and technical process of editing. The program is led by Joe Talbot, director of The Last Black Man in San Francisco, who will be actively guiding the film’s story structure. Our guest editing instructor, Andrew Fitzgerald (The Rehearsal, I Think You Should Leave), will also help shape the edit.

We are looking for editors who are strong storytellers, technically confident, collaborative, patient, and excited to help young filmmakers shape a film.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with students in small groups to shape scenes, story, tone, pacing, and performance
  • Collaborate closely with the Post Producer, editing team, assistant editor, and staff to keep the project moving
  • Participate in screenings, feedback sessions, and story discussions
  • Help prepare the film for picture lock, sound, music, color, and finishing
  • Stay flexible and responsive in a fast‑moving post‑production environment
Ideal candidates
  • Strong narrative editing experience
  • A confident sense of story, performance, rhythm, and tone
  • Strong technical experience in Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Comfort working collaboratively with directors, producers, editors, staff, and students
  • Ability to give clear, supportive feedback
  • Patience and enthusiasm for mentoring young filmmakers
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to stay organized under tight timelines
  • Bay Area availability

Student hours are generally Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm, with staff hours extending before and after student hours for planning, screenings, notes, and project prep. Some flexibility may be needed as the film moves toward picture lock and finishing.

This is a paid role at a modest nonprofit weekly rate. 48

Hills is a 501(c)(3) youth film program dedicated to giving high school students hands‑on experience working alongside professional filmmakers on an ambitious original narrative short film.
