Position: Job Captain

The BDE definition of a Job Captain is someone who has the technical and leadership abilities to plan, organize, and manage the efforts of a production team to produce quality construction documents within an allotted timeframe . They should be skilled in managing client and consultant relationships. They continue to learn and innovate. This individual anticipates job/project expectations and needs while performing design and technical tasks requiring application of BDE and industry standard techniques and knowledge.

A Job Captain can participate in the conceptual design phase and provides full support throughout the duration of a project. They are highly organized and willing to contribute creatively to the team.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Yes. Provides technical guidance and delegation to the project team, including less experienced architects/architectural staff.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • A Job captain works with the Project Manager to learn and develop initial project managerial skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Independently performs various assignments requiring skills in all conventional aspects of architectural designs, phases, and coordination for large and/or complex projects.
  • Identify and resolve complicated design issues with innovative and practical solutions and evaluate conceptual and technical design ideas. Discuss proposed ideas with Project Manager and/or Studio Lead.
  • Contributes to the production of 3D models using a range of 3D modeling software(s).
  • Produces accurate documents aligned with firm and industry standards for project assignments.
  • Performs design layouts, which require researching, compiling, and recording information for assigned project work.
  • Communicate the progress of assignments to Project Team, Project Manager(s) and other supervisor(s) according to the established project schedule and workplan.
  • Ensure project information is incorporated into project documents.
  • Reviews and red-lines project specifications, reports, and drawings for accuracy, omissions, and legibility in accordance with firm standards.
  • Must be able to implement and understand the basis of design and/or specifications.
  • Compiles and analyzes relevant project data.
  • Reviews Consultant’s drawings and/or accompanying Consultant information; coordinates architectural drawings accordingly.
  • Must be able to thoroughly review Consultant’s drawings and/or accompanying Consultant information; coordinates architectural drawings accordingly.
  • Must be able to lead efficient and effective consultant coordination meetings;
    Manage consultant communication.
  • Documents client and/or consultant meetings. Communicates information to Project Manager and Project Team.
  • Liaise with Specialists, Project Managers, Studio Leads, and Consultants.
  • Provide technical and design feedback in the development of project documents.
  • Experience in construction administration, consultant coordination, and city department/agency coordination.
  • Thorough understanding of all drawing series within a construction document set.
  • Involved in QAQC duties of a project, including red-lining drawings produced by self and other team members.
  • Performs other tasks as requested by supervisor(s).
Required Skills & Abilities:
  • On the path to Architectural Registration and licensure. Licensure preferred.
  • Fluent in architectural software such as Revit, AutoCAD, and 3D modeling required.
  • Strong proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketchup and InDesign graphic software preferred.
  • Fluent in MS Office Suite required.
  • Strong proficiency in Bluebeam and Adobe suite.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines
  • Strong knowledge of building codes
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills imperative.
  • Adaptable and flexible.
  • Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently and/or with a team.
  • Able and comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Serves as a role model for staff when faced with challenging situations. Lead by example.
Education & Experience:
  • Professional Degree in Architecture from an accredited program preferred.
  • Proficiency in technical knowledge of architectural drafting and design.
  • 8+ years of experience.
  • 3-5 years of working experience in schematic design through construction administration phases.
  • Experience with multifamily housing preferred.
