Position: Job Captain

Company Description

AP+I Design, Inc. is a minority- and woman-owned design firm dedicated to creating exceptional spaces that foster meaningful human connections in the Bay Area and around the world. The firm is known for practical, high-performing design solutions that also deliver a strong visual impact. AP+I Design emphasizes authenticity, hard work, and a straightforward approach, focusing on substance over style for its own sake.

Team members collaborate closely with clients and project partners to produce spaces that are both beautiful and highly functional.

Role Description

The Job Captain is a full-time, on-site role based in Mountain View, CA or San Francisco, CA, responsible for coordinating and managing the production of architectural documents throughout all project phases. This role oversees the development of detailed drawings, specifications, and models, ensuring that design intent, building codes, and project standards are met. The Job Captain collaborates closely with project managers, designers, consultants, and contractors, facilitating communication, resolving technical issues, and tracking progress against schedules and budgets.

Day-to-day tasks include organizing project workflows, reviewing and redlining drawings, supporting permitting processes, and assisting with construction administration activities such as responding to RFIs and reviewing submittals. The role also involves mentoring junior staff, maintaining quality control, and contributing to a culture of thorough, efficient, and client-focused design delivery.

Qualifications
  • Strong architectural production skills, including coordinating construction documents and detailing for commercial and workplace projects.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design and documentation software (e.g., Revit, Enscape, AutoCAD, Bluebeam) and ability to manage digital project files.
  • Solid understanding of building codes, permitting processes, and technical standards relevant to California and the Bay Area.
  • Effective project coordination skills, including organizing tasks, tracking schedules, and communicating with consultants and contractors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document decisions and convey technical information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience participating in construction administration (RFIs, submittals, site observations) and resolving field conditions with the project team.
  • Ability to collaborate in an inclusive studio environment, support junior team members, and contribute to a culture of accountability and mutual respect.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or related field; professional licensure or progress toward licensure is preferred.
  • Previous experience as a Job Captain or similar role in an architecture firm, ideally with workplace, commercial, or interior architecture projects.
