Position OverviewHorizons at SFFS is seeking a dedicated and experienced Middle School Teachers with a focus in math/science or Humanities. We are seeking quality educators with a dynamic talent for creating and nurturing a lifelong love of learning in children while building skills necessary for success in middle and high school. We are looking for a talented, passionate, caring professional who will work as a team player, fulfill the Horizons mission, and create a joyous, inclusive, inspiring and educational culture.
Each Middle School STEM or Humanities Teacher will teach two grades.
- Design and teach high quality, culturally responsive, project-based curriculum and engage students in Math/Science OR Humanities throughout our six week summer enrichment program.
- Meet regularly with their Teaching Assistant to plan curriculum and lessons with weekly support from C&I Lead.
- Build a classroom environment that prioritizes student led activities, projects, and experimentation.
- Plan and lead fun, community-building games.
- Lead Field Trips around the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Develop and nurture a safe, respectful, challenging and fun learning environment.
- Engage with middle school students outside of the classroom during club time, middle school retreat, and field days.
- Help maintain ongoing communication with parents, caregivers and school year teachers.
In addition to a strong commitment to Horizon’s mission, this position requires a balance of content knowledge and proficiency in pedagogical best practices that are culturally responsive. The ideal candidate for the Lead Teacher position must be flexible, well organized, capable of taking initiative, and full of enthusiasm for both teaching and learning. Below are some of the required and preferred qualifications for the position.
Required- 2+ years of middle school teaching experience as either classroom teacher or subject teacher.
- Knowledge and experience with NGSS, integrated math/science curriculum, and Common Core math standards OR Humanities standards and best practices.
- Ability to differentiate instruction based on students needs, skills, and interests.
- Ability to relate well to diverse school age children and families, to plan and deliver engaging, challenging lessons for 5th-8th grade students.
- Knowledge and skills in classroom management, social emotional learning and specific strategies for developing children’s noncognitive skills such as focus, determination, empathy and self discipline.
- Understanding and knowledge of the issues and challenges facing public school students and families living in the Mission District.
- Ability to maintain good communication between all parties, have clear expectations and directions, and to give and receive feedback to the ED and fellow colleagues.
- English/Spanish language and bicultural proficiency preferred.
- 4 or more years working as a Middle School teacher.
- Leadership experience and ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Teaching credential or equivalent experience.
The salary range for the Middle School Lead Teacher position is $9,792-$12,960 (commensurate with experience) for seven weeks plus two days of full time work. The Middle School Lead Teacher is an exempt position and includes a week of prep prior to the program’s start and six weeks of summer program, and two pre-summer PD days.
