Breakthrough Summerbridge is a summer academic enrichment program and school-year academic initiative focused on preparing students for success through three consecutive six-week summer sessions and two years of year-round support. During the summer, students participate in math, humanities, science, co-curricular classes, and various non-academic electives, while the school-year program includes academic enrichment, high school counseling, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) workshops for parents.
The program is centered around a "students teaching students" model, where high school and college students serve as teaching fellows under the guidance of experienced educators. This dynamic and creative environment ensures that students and teaching fellows alike thrive in a collaborative and inspiring setting.
Instructional Coaches (ICs) are experienced and successful professional educators who provide content-specific support and mentoring for Breakthrough Summerbridge’s Teaching Fellows (TFs) and engage fully in the Breakthrough Summerbridge community. ICs dictate the level of academic rigor during Breakthrough Summerbridge’s summer program through their interactions with TFs, approval of TF lesson plans, and regular feedback on classroom observations.
Each IC supervises two Teaching Fellows in one subject area and grade level (for example: Humanities 9 or Science
7), leads and participates in professional development workshops, contributes to grade-level Professional Learning Community (PLCs), observes classes, evaluates lesson plans, and meets frequently with individual Teaching Fellows regarding their on-going work. ICs also plan and lead a teaching team meeting once per week. As the only professional teachers on-site, ICs are accountable for the quality of instruction Breakthrough Summerbridge students receive and are responsible for supporting Breakthrough Summerbridge TFs through their first teaching experience.
