SFCBC Associate Pastor’s Job Description
The SFCBC Associate Pastor position is a full‑time ministry role that focuses on preaching, teaching, shepherding and mentoring, supporting the Senior Pastor’s work. The Associate Pastor leads by example of Christian living, equips lay people, participates in worship and outreach, provides pastoral care, and works closely with the Board of Deacons, Church Council and committees to carry out the church mission.
1.Preaching and Teaching
- Preaches in either or both the English and Chinese worships when delegated by the Senior Pastor.
- Provides teaching, discipleship training, nurturing, leadership, guidance and support to ministry volunteers.
- Works with the Worship Committee to develop worship themes and schedules.
- Collaborates with church leaders to identify the spiritual gifts and abilities of congregation members.
- Encourages spiritual growth and offers guidance to seekers.
- Personal growth:
- Maintains an active devotional life and intercessory prayer life.
- Demonstrates personal holiness and integrity.
- Shepherds the congregation per John 21:15‑17.
- Counsels and assists individuals undergoing life changes such as weddings, funerals, job loss, depression, crises, etc.
- Shows love and care, being willing and available to visit homes, hospitals, and other care facilities.
- Motivates the congregation to seek God through Bible study and prayer life.
- Follows up with visitors to the church.
- Assists the Senior Pastor in overseeing administrative functions (supervision, coaching, support, evaluations) in collaboration with church staff and officers when delegated.
- Works with committees to manage church functions and resources effectively.
- Acts as a team player and builder.
- Cultivates relationships on behalf of the church with Southern Baptist Convention affiliates.
- Connects appropriate congregation members with community concerns.
- Cooperates with other Christian organizations for evangelism and relief efforts.
- Engages in professional development activities such as training seminars, denomination conventions, and pastors’ retreats on a regular basis.
The Pastoral Committee, appointed by the Board of Deacons, will consult with the Senior Pastor at pre‑arranged intervals. The Associate Pastor may be invited to these sessions to discuss goal setting, evaluate effectiveness, make recommendations, and participate in continuous communication.
Other specific duties and assignments may be assigned to the Associate Pastor at the discretion of the Senior Pastor. Adjustments to these responsibilities may arise and will be reviewed by the Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, and Board of Deacons, with major changes requiring congregation approval.
