ResponsibilitiesUnder direction, the Librarian III performs difficult and responsible librarian work; supervises the operation of a large branch library or department of the main library; supervises the activities of subordinate personnel; and performs related duties as required. Responsibilities also include interpreting and enforcing library policy, maintaining awareness of current reading trends, and coordinating appropriate actions.
Essential Functions
- Supervise the operation of a large branch library or a department of the main library, or a cluster of branch libraries.
- Supervise and review the activities of subordinate personnel; assist them in resolving questions and problems related to library activities; interview applicants for supportive positions.
- Assist patrons in locating and using library facilities and materials, selecting materials, and answering a wide variety of questions.
- Keep branch or department collection current and useful by recommending or coordinating staff recommendations of library materials to be purchased, repaired or discarded; develop collection through personal knowledge of materials available; may act as a consultant in a special field.
- Perform reference work of a technical nature requiring extensive searching and analyzing; conduct research; prepare detailed bibliographies, book lists and other information.
- Plan and carry out adult and community programs to meet community needs; visit and work with various adult and community groups to promote use of and interest in the library.
- Supervise the processing and cataloging or ordering of library material and the activities of the personnel in these departments; determine best sources of supply for library material.
- Plan and set up displays and exhibits; maintain a pleasant and orderly atmosphere in the branch or department.
- Write reports; supervise the maintenance and/or preparation of various files and records; submit budget requests; may work on special projects.
Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences (e.g., MLS/MLIS) from a college, university, or program accredited by the American Library Association.
ExperienceFour (4) years of experience as a professional librarian, including at least two (2) years supervising other professional librarians.
Special Conditions- Some positions require fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department’s bilingual needs; applicants must indicate on the application form the language(s) in which they claim proficiency.
- Some positions require twelve (12) months (2,000 hours) of verifiable experience performing the duties of a Children’s or Youth Services Librarian.
- Positions may involve irregular work schedules and may require evening and/or weekend work; they may require constant public contact and may be located at various locations within the Library system.
