About the Role

Position:
Teen Research Program Instructor at the Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley. The role involves facilitating engaging STEM programming for teens (grades 7‑12) in a hands‑on, supportive environment.

Responsibilities
  • Inspire teens with curiosity, excitement, and passion for science learning.
  • Engage them in hands‑on, content‑specific learning experiences.
  • Mentor participants through exploration, investigation, discovery, and invention.
  • Present programs in an energetic and professional manner that actively engages teens while maintaining a safe and comfortable environment.
  • Manage program materials, including set‑up, clean‑up, and storage.
  • Understand and apply building safety and security protocols, including emergency procedures.
  • Serve as an enthusiastic role model and mentor for teens.
  • Adhere to all UC Berkeley policies and The Lawrence Hall of Science procedures.
Qualifications
  • Experienced or eager to share science learning experiences with youth grades 7‑12.
  • Demonstrated creative teaching methods in informal or formal learning environments.
  • Responsible, organized, and able to work independently and collaboratively with an educational team.
  • Strong customer‑service and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic proficiency with business software (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Required content expertise for the specific program to which you apply (e.g., bioinformatics, robotics, marine biology, etc.).
  • Reliable, punctual, and available for the required dates and times.
  • Able to traverse uneven ground and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • For marine biology instructors only: current California driver’s license and age 21 or older.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPR certified.
Compensation and Benefits
  • 100% limited appointment for three months (5 / 6 / 2024 through 8 / 2 / 2024).
  • Non‑exempt and paid bi‑weekly.
  • Salary range $23.90 – $31.80 per hour.
  • Multiple positions available.
  • Not a visa opportunity.
Schedule
  • High‑school program:
    Training June 4–5, Set‑up June 6–7, Instruction June 10–14 (8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.).
  • Middle‑school program:
    Training June 4–5, Set‑up June 20–21, Instruction June 24–28 (8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.).
  • High‑school field program (UC Santa Cruz):
    Training July 17–19, Pack‑up July 21, Instruction July 21–26 (residential).
Additional Requirements
  • Background check and fingerprinting required.
  • Mandated reporter responsibilities (must report abuse or neglect of children or dependent adults).
