Primary PurposeAssist special education teacher in providing students with disabilities appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them achieve educational progress related to their intellectual, communication, emotional, social, physical, and self‑help skills. Provide inclusion support, academic and behavior support, implementation in positive behavior supports, and support to students in social and interpersonal learning.
PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION:
Social and Interpersonal Learning (SAIL) Students accessing this instructional setting demonstrate significant behavioral and emotional challenges that require intensive support. This program addresses students’ academic and behavioral needs with highly individualized approaches and positive behavior supports. SAIL students require a highly specialized learning environment due to significant communication, social, and behavioral needs. This classroom setting includes intensive social skill instruction, behavior modification strategies, and concentrated academic instruction based on the individual needs of students.
Students have opportunities to interact with their typical peers to the fullest extent possible in an effort to reinforce the generalization of acquired skills.
Education/Certification: GED or High School Diploma. Associate degree or two years of higher education preferred. Must register with SBEC to obtain an Educational Aide Certification.
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Ability to work with children with disabilities. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively. Knowledge of general office equipment. Flexibility with situations that require a change in schedule.
Help teacher prepare instructional materials, help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports, provide assistance to substitute teachers.
Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs (may require some lifting). Help manage behavior of students.
Support students’ instructional needs in accordance with their Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs). Assist students with personal care as appropriate. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special needs.
Work with individual students or small groups. Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students. Maintain confidentiality. Participate in staff development training programs and special events as assigned. Candidates must be able to fulfill all responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Assisting with positioning students with physical disabilities. Districtwide travel. Hours may vary.
