Position Overview
City College of San Francisco seeks part‑time instructors in the English Department to teach college‑level composition courses, including corequisite support sections, with in‑person instruction at any of the College’s campuses.
Job Duties- Teach sequence courses in college‑level composition, including corequisite support.
- Deliver hybrid, online, in‑the‑day, evening, and Saturday classes at any of the College’s campuses (current need is for in‑person instruction).
- Perform duties associated with instructing students and evaluating their progress.
- Hold regular office hours on campus and be available to assist and advise students as needed.
- Follow the course outline in developing class content and lesson plans; select books and other materials; assign, comment on, and grade student work in a timely, beneficial manner.
- Use learning resources and technologies to supplement student learning and enhance instruction.
- Support and engage in a community focused on culturally responsive, inclusive, and anti‑racist practices that prioritize student success and close opportunity gaps.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Earned Master’s Degree in English, Literature, Comparative Literature, or Composition from an accredited institution; or a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the above
* and* Master’s Degree in Linguistics, TESL, Speech, Education with a specialization in Reading, Creative Writing, or Journalism from an accredited institution; or equivalently qualified. - Held a fully satisfied California Community College Librarian Credential (eligible for credentials issued before July 1, 1990).
- At least two (2) years teaching at a community college.
- Demonstrated success teaching college‑level composition and corequisite support courses.
- Demonstrated success teaching in English classrooms with diverse students with varying levels of preparedness and language development.
- Graduate‑level training in the teaching of composition.
- Graduate‑level training in the teaching of literature and reading.
- Graduate‑level training in the teaching of reading, creative writing, or journalism.
- Demonstrated ability to work and collaborate successfully with colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to write and speak effectively.
- Expertise in adapting instructional techniques and assignments for varied learning styles and abilities.
- Experience creating student‑centered, relevant classes and engaging in professional development focused on closing achievement gaps.
- Use of technology applicable to English instruction.
- Demonstrated commitment to staying current in the field of teaching composition.
- Evidence of successful instructional experience at the university or college level using culturally responsive pedagogy.
- Experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to rectifying policies and processes that restrict access for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
Rate set in accordance with the City College of San Francisco Faculty Salary Schedule for hourly assignments; entry rate ranges from $92.85 to $122.94 per hour based on placement.
