Student Assistant Position
Non‑academic, non‑classified Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. They are at‑will employees with no entitlement rights or benefit eligibility. Employment is contingent upon verification of class schedule, employment history, background verification, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the Board of Trustees. Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during fall and spring semesters and may work a maximum of 28 hours per week outside of those semesters.
Student Assistants are prohibited from being employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year. There is no holiday pay or pay for time not worked.
Student Assistants perform duties ranging from unskilled to skilled, including manual, clerical, and public contact tasks. Assignments are designed for a student, allow flexibility around class schedules, and are supervised under immediate or general supervision, depending on level. Specific duties are defined by the appropriate Division or Department and may require training on the job.
Levels- Student Assistant I – Entry level/Semi‑skilled
:
Work is under immediate supervision. Tasks are standardized, routine, and repetitive. Work assignments may include the use of special equipment, software applications, or tools per established procedure. - Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced
:
Work is under general supervision. Tasks are less routine and involve moderate responsibility. May involve access to sophisticated data systems and confidential information. Requires a minimum of one year of experience in the same assignment. - Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead
:
Work is under general supervision. Tasks are broad and require considerable independent judgment. May direct the work of lower‑level assistants. Requires a minimum of two years of experience in the same assignment.
- Student Assistant I: Little or no prior experience or education required.
- Student Assistant II: Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required.
- Student Assistant III: Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.
- Skills required to perform job assignment.
- Limited independent judgment and decision‑making, depending on level.
- Ability to balance work and studies.
- Must be a full‑time student enrolled in a minimum of 12 units at one of the three Coast Community College District campuses (OCC, GWC, CCC).
- Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse student population, including students with disabilities, as part of an equity‑minded practice.
- Regular attendance is essential; inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude continued employment.
- The holder of this position is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with district policies on Title IX and related procedures.
