Representative Duties

This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual‑gesture language used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada. It focuses on developing basic conversation skills, emphasizing the culture and history of ASL through in‑class and out‑of‑class requirements.

  • Identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level.
  • Describe and demonstrate ASL classifiers, grammar structure, facial expression, and body movement.
  • Compose ASL gloss translation from English.
  • Explain basic cultural aspects of Deaf culture.
  • Examine and show an understanding of the history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.

This assignment may include teaching at other campus sites, day or evening classes, weekend classes, large classes, distance learning, and multiple teaching methodologies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of related professional experience, or
  • Associate's degree and at least 6 years of related professional experience.
  • The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications.

Candidates who feel they possess such equivalent qualifications must request and submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form. Supporting documents must be included with the completed form.

  • Ability to develop curriculum, including curriculum delivered via different modalities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency.
  • Ability to assess student learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies that would benefit the program.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.
  • Commitment to a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio‑economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
