Dance/PE Instructor (Temporary, Part-Time Pool)

Job Overview – The Department of Kinesiology, Athletics & Dance seeks a qualified dance instructor for a temporary, part‑time pool position at the Ocean Campus Wellness Center.

Job Duties
  • Teach in‑person ballet technique courses (beginning through advanced); optional teaching of modern, jazz, hip hop, tap dance, and yoga.
  • Conduct classes on days, evenings, or Saturdays as needed.
  • Evaluate student performance and progress through in‑class observation, practical skills and technique tests, and written assignments.
  • Create lesson plans aligned with approved department course outlines.
  • Participate in instructional‑related and departmental activities: curriculum development, selection of instructional materials, revision of teaching and testing materials, assessment of student learning outcomes, and attendance record keeping.
  • Participate in department and dance program events, including productions, choreography for student performances, and supervision of dance activities.
  • Attend department and college functions, such as staff meetings, committee work, and technical trainings.
  • Support an innovative culture of culturally responsive, inclusive, and anti‑racist practices related to student success and equity gaps.
  • Participate in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti‑racism.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Earned Master’s degree in Dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis from an accredited institution;
    or earned Bachelor’s degree in a related field and Master’s degree in physical education, life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music from an accredited institution;
    or hold a fully satisfied California Community College Instructor Credential in Physical Education.
  • Valid driver’s license at time of appointment.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience teaching ballet technique, modern, jazz, hip hop, tap dance, and yoga in post‑secondary education.
  • Ability to teach beginning through advanced levels of ballet technique.
  • Practical demonstrative abilities and active participation in teaching.
  • Strong pedagogical and technical approach to dance coursework.
  • Ability to motivate and teach diverse students and learning styles.
  • Certification in Yoga RYT (200‑hour) and/or other dance certifications (e.g., Graham, Cunningham).
  • Experience developing and revising curriculum aligned with current trends.
  • Experience in grant writing.
  • Evidence of successful instructional experience at the college level using culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of inequities in higher education and commitment to rectifying barriers for historically minoritized students.
