Position Description

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) invites applications for full‑time faculty positions at the Associate or Full Professor rank, in the In Residence series.

Context

UCSF is one of the nation’s top medical research institutions. The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is the largest department of epidemiology in the University of California system and provides a supportive academic environment for innovative research. Opportunities include research on population health and health equity, study designs, biostatistical and bioinformatics methods, artificial intelligence, health system–embedded clinical research, and collaboration with other UCSF departments and schools.

The department delivers training in epidemiology, biostatistics, health data science, public health, and health services research, teaching medical students, fellows, junior faculty, and students in two master’s programs (Health Data Science and Clinical & Epidemiological Research) and a PhD Program in Epidemiology and Translational Sciences.

Duties

In Residence faculty members are expected to lead an independent, extramurally funded research program; teach, train, and mentor students, fellows, and junior faculty; and take on significant departmental and university service. There are opportunities for leadership within the department.

Qualifications
  • A doctorate in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, medicine, health policy, bioinformatics/clinical informatics, data science, or a closely related field.
  • A record of research excellence, including successful extramural funding and high‑impact peer‑reviewed publications.

  • A record of mentoring students in applied research or methods development.
  • Extramural or other self‑generated funding to cover most of their own salary for three years (e.g., current PI or co‑investigator on NIH or other grants).

We seek candidates who contribute to UCSF PRIDE Values (Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence) and enrich our culture of collaboration. Priority consideration will be given to candidates whose research programs align with the department’s strategic initiatives.
