Greenager Program Intern

(Local Applicants Preferred)

Internship Term:
August 11, 2024 - September 25, 2027

Work Schedule:

Monday through Friday (20 hours per week, with occasional work on Saturdays for special events)

Primary Area of Focus:

Youth Stewardship Program, a free environmental service learning program. YSP's full program includes 1 in-class visit and 5 field trips. Each trip consists of environmental education activities and habitat restoration work.

Duties:

  • Directly mentor groups of 45 youths annually in the Greenager Program, graduating seven cohorts in total
  • Supervise and lead 1,000 hours of outdoor recreational trips for youth
  • Conduct over 2,500 hours in curriculum development and environmental education activities
  • Coordinate volunteer events and park objects for youths to engage in their communities actively
  • Plan and implement an 8-month agenda including place-based educational, discussions, and activities
  • Facilitate presentations and meetings with partner organizations to increase participants from priority neighborhoods
  • Recruit and interview over 300 rising 9th-12th grade youth participants
  • Track program budget and process invoices and payments from vendors.

Compensation:

  • $500 weekly stipend, paid bi-weekly
  • $1280 monthly housing allowance
  • Health Insurance, if required

Desired

Qualifications:

  • Enjoys working with diverse intergenerational crowds, and has a strong interest in working with youth
  • Interest and experience in youth and urban parks
  • Experience leading/facilitating youth through structured activities
  • Able to engage and comfortable managing groups of youth and/or adults for 2+ hours
  • Works well in a team setting and similarly, is self-motivated and can work independently
  • Passion for the environment and working outdoors
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literate (MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, Internet)
  • Previous related experience or background in biology, environmental studies, or other related subjects or strong interest and willingness to learn independently and through experience
  • B.A or B.S in a related subject (preferred not required)
  • Comfortable driving large trucks or willing to learn
  • Ideally Bay Area resident
  • Passion for the environment and working outdoors and genuine interest in connecting youth to nature

Required Qualifications:

  • Willing to work occasional off hours and outdoors in inclement weather
  • California State Drivers' License with a good driving record
  • Experience working with youth is a must

Training:

Interns will receive hands-on training as well as formal workshop-style training over the course of a year in San Francisco's natural history and ecology, youth leadership techniques, restoration skills, program coordination, special event planning, and general operation training. Interns will also learn key aspects of program, and project management through hands-on work, and inter-departmental and cross-agency collaborations.

  • Highly collaborative team player able to motivate and work with staff and partners and work cross-functionally between SFRPD departments
  • Able to work well under pressure and adapt easily to changing situations and priorities, while exercising good judgment and staying focused on overarching goals
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to work occasional off-hours and outdoors in inclement weather
  • Comfortable working with small and large intergenerational crowds
  • Willingness to submit a copy of driving record, if hired
  • Commit to 20 hours per week and 2-year commitment
