Summary:

The On-Call Substitute Teacher provides instructional and classroom management support in the absence of the regular teacher for grades K-8. They will ensure continuity of learning by following pre-established lesson plans and maintaining a positive classroom environment that aligns with SF Day’s values and culture. The role requires quick adaptability, clear communication, and the ability to manage different learning environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Be prepared to accept assignments on short notice, often with little lead time, and be ready to work across different grade levels and subjects as needed.
  • Maintain a structured and respectful learning environment by managing student behavior and ensuring classroom rules are followed.
  • Teach lessons or facilitate learning activities as outlined in the plans, ensuring students understand key concepts.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day, including during recess, transitions between classes, and lunch, ensuring their safety.
  • Record student attendance and ensure that the classroom operates smoothly at the start of the day.
  • Report to the division head about the day’s progress, including any behavioral or academic concerns.
  • Assist students with their classwork, clarify instructions, and provide additional support for students who may need extra help.
  • Be flexible to changes in schedule or subject matter, sometimes stepping into various classrooms throughout the day.
  • Follow school policies and procedures, including safety drills and emergency responses.
  • Other duties as needed.
Requirements

Qualifications

  • A BA degree; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Teaching and or Assistant Teaching experience in independent schools is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • A love for working with children or young adults, is required.

Working Conditions:

  • 80% Indoors, 20% outdoors
  • Ability to move around the school and playground to attend to individual operational and other matters
  • Occasional requirement to lift more than 30 lbs
  • Sit for an extended amount of time
