Job Overview

Under the direction of the Safety, Health, and Compliance Director, the Safety Officer develops, implements, maintains and improves effective Occupational Safety and Health Programs using a focused safety management system, with primary emphasis on reducing hazards and promoting a safe environment. The Safety Officer will work in the Airport’s Safety, Health, and Compliance section, which oversees the health and safety of Commission staff, including workers’ compensation and injury and illness prevention programs.

Functions
  • Lead and participate in safety surveys and observations of plants, facilities, and building and field work sites; evaluate fire, electrical, mechanical, structural, or other potentially hazardous conditions; recommend mitigation plans; prepare reports for management and regulatory agencies.
  • Lead and participate in the investigation of accidents to determine causes of accidents; recommend appropriate corrective action; prepare reports of investigation for management and industrial safety agencies.
  • Monitor the implementation of mitigation or corrective actions that result from the investigation or surveys on an ongoing basis and ensure safety assurance for reducing potentially hazardous work methods and procedures.
  • Assist and provide technical guidance in establishing airport-wide safety training programs for all employees; provide for appropriate courses of instruction in safety procedures, such as safety training materials, including manuals, bulletins, and written procedures. Assist in organizing, conducting, and participating in regularly scheduled safety meetings with employees.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of occupational safety programs and recommend modifications to comply with legal requirements, prevent injuries, and reduce liability.
  • Obtain, maintain, and analyze occupational safety and health data to identify trends, and comply with regulatory recordkeeping requirements.
  • Maintain current information in the field of industrial and occupational safety as it applies to work activities; keep informed on State, Federal, and local legislation relating to transportation, industrial, and occupational safety.
  • Assist and provide technical guidance in developing, maintaining, reviewing, and revising occupational policies and procedures.
  • Nature of Work

    The normal work period is Monday through Friday, however, you may be required to report to work on weekends, evenings, and holidays to support Airport emergencies.

    Qualifications
  • Education: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, or equivalent degree in a closely related field from an accredited college or university; AND
  • Experience: Four (4) years of professional industrial or occupational safety experience, which must include work safety assessments, engineering design review, accident investigation, safety program development and safety management; AND
  • Certification: Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by the American Board of Certified Safety Professionals; AND
  • License: Possession of current valid California driver’s license; AND
  • Ability: To wear personal protective equipment, such as respirator and the ability to climb ladders, bend, squat and crawl in tight spaces to safely access work sites.

    Note:

    A medical examination and the probationary period will be used to evaluate this qualification.
  • Substitutions
  • Combination of a baccalaureate degree in one of the disciplines specified in MQ #1 and six (6) years of experience as described in MQ #2 may substitute for qualifications #1 and #2.
  • Combination of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree in Engineering, Physical or Natural Sciences from an accredited college or university and seven (7) years of experience as described in MQ #2 may substitute for qualifications #1 and #2.
  • Combination of any baccalaureate or graduate degree from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of experience as described in MQ #2 may substitute for qualifications #1 and #2.
