WSP USA is seeking a Senior Consultant, Ports and Marine Engineering to join our National Maritime Practice Group. The position can be based out of a number of locations including Irvine, San Diego, San Francisco, CA, Miami, FL, Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, and Houston, TX.
Job DescriptionProvides engineering support to other technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the development, design, construction, and/or inspection of structures and facilities for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects in the public and private sector. The scope includes piers, wharves, port and upland marine terminals, seawalls, bulkheads, dry docks, marinas, and a range of nearshore and offshore facilities.
Delivers work products that meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Responsibilities- Provide leadership for engineering tasks including collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, survey data, technical reports, and drawings.
- Lead development of construction plans and schedules, specifications, and cost estimates for ports and marine projects. Prepare and implement site safety activity plans and coordinate field work activities.
- Lead cross‑functional teams to execute project work on a mid‑level project and/or multiple concurrent smaller projects. Tasks include tracking budgets, milestones, and supporting completion of Plans, Specifications and Estimate (PS&E) submissions.
- Write technical reports and generate concise documentation of findings, using sketches, calculations, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and engineering software (including SAP
2000). - Apply higher‑order engineering techniques to develop project design requirements while incorporating marine‑practice engineering standards.
- Create finite element models for design of fixed and floating marine structures, addressing gravity, live loads, operational, environmental, and seismic loads.
- Prepare design documentation of structural components including steel and concrete systems, deep foundation systems, substructure, and superstructure elements.
- Prepare project task budgets and schedules for review.
- Prepare and give presentations to communicate findings and recommendations.
- Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner.
- Conduct overwater and/or over‑deck inspections of port terminals.
- Exercise responsible decision‑making regarding company funds and resources; adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Complete all assigned trainings.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- 5 to 7 years of relevant engineering experience with marine project design.
- EIT or equivalent certification/licensure.
- Proficiency in SAP
2000 or equivalent FEM software; design and detailing of reinforced and prestressed concrete and steel per ACI, AISC, PCI, and/or AASHTO. - Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and other BIM tools.
- Construction experience in ports and marine projects.
- Understanding of multidisciplinary team coordination and design/documentation standards.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and technical report writing skills.
- Self‑leadership, attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization.
- Track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s policies.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program with 7+ years of post‑education design experience.
- Registered Professional Engineer licensure.
- Familiarity with domestic and international marine terminal codes (MOTEMS, ASCE COPRI, PIANC, etc.) and DoD criteria.
- Experience with LSDYNA or related engineering software.
- Membership or active participation in local professional organizations.
- Experience with marine, port, and coastal construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
- Field investigation and/or construction support experience for port and marine structures.
