Hadron Energy is looking for a full‑time on‑site Nuclear Safety Engineer based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Nuclear Safety Engineer will support the development, evaluation, and verification of safety‑related systems and analyses for Hadron Energy’s micro‑modular reactor (MMR). This individual will collaborate with reactor design, thermal‑hydraulics, licensing, and systems engineering teams to ensure that the reactor meets or exceeds all applicable safety, regulatory, and performance requirements.
You will play a central role in defining the safety case for Hadron’s innovative reactor design—conducting analyses, preparing documentation, and supporting the NRC licensing process.
Responsibilities- Conduct nuclear safety analyses across a broad range of anticipated operational occurrences (AOOs), postulated accidents, and design basis events
- Develop and maintain safety analysis models using tools such as RELAP5, TRACE, MELCOR, SCALE
, or equivalent codes - Support probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) development and updates for reactor systems, identifying dominant risk contributors and mitigation strategies
- Perform deterministic and probabilistic safety evaluations to ensure compliance with NRC regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with systems, thermal‑hydraulics, and reactor design teams to integrate safety requirements into design architecture
- Develop safety‑related documentation, including SAR (Safety Analysis Report) sections
, technical evaluations, and safety‑related calculations - Participate in hazard analyses, failure modes evaluations, and reliability assessments
- Provide technical input for NRC licensing interactions
, meetings, and regulatory submittals - Support verification and validation (V&V) activities for safety analysis tools and models
- Contribute to internal design reviews, risk assessments, and quality assurance activities in accordance with NQA-1
- Stay current with evolving nuclear safety regulations, guidance, and industry best practices
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in nuclear safety analysis, PRA, or regulatory compliance in the nuclear industry
- Proficiency with safety and risk analysis tools such as RELAP5, TRACE, MELCOR, SCALE, RADTRAD, SAPHIRE
, or similar codes - Strong understanding of 10 CFR Part 50/52
, NRC regulatory guides, and safety analysis methodologies - Experience preparing or reviewing Safety Analysis Reports (SARs), licensing submittals, or design certification documentation
- Familiarity with thermal‑hydraulics, reactor systems, accident scenarios, and containment performance
- Understanding of NQA-1, configuration control, and quality assurance requirements
- Excellent analytical, communication, and technical writing skills
- Ability to work cross‑functionally within a fast‑paced, innovative engineering environment
- Passion for nuclear safety, clean energy innovation, and developing systems that exceed regulatory and industry safety expectations
