Radiation Effects & Shielding Specialist

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Radiation Effects & Shielding Specialist, based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Remote. The position is ideal for candidates with deep expertise in radiation transport, shielding design, and materials science who are passionate about ensuring the radiological safety and long-term integrity of advanced nuclear systems.

You will work closely with our cross-functional team—including reactor physics, materials, and I&C engineers—to lead the radiological shielding design and radiation effects analysis for Hadron’s micro modular reactor. This role is critical for modeling the radiation environment, designing effective shielding, calculating dose rates, and assessing the impact of radiation on structural materials and electronic components to ensure their operational lifespan.

  • Strong understanding of neutron and gamma transport physics and dosimetry
  • Knowledge of radiation effects on materials (e.g., displacement per atom (DPA), material degradation) and electronics
  • Experience in designing biological shielding and component shielding for complex reactor geometries
  • Familiarity with radiological protection (ALARA) principles and regulatory requirements (e.g., 10 CFR Part 20)
  • Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills
