Job DescriptionAECOM is actively seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Compliance Coordinator/Deputy Project Manager to join our Environmental Planning & Permitting group in Southern California. This hybrid role can be based in any of our California offices—including Oakland, Sacramento, San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, and San Luis Obispo.
Experience and expertise in California environmental compliance and ecology is required. The position provides office‑based oversight of environmental compliance efforts involving natural resources, cultural resources, paleontological resources, hazardous materials, stormwater monitoring, and air quality. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience overseeing and implementing these disciplines and will excel at verbal and written communication and organization. Projects are complex, large‑scale, and span multiple sectors.
The role supports large teams in a fast‑paced environment at all project stages, including constraints, environmental clearance and permitting, compliance, and close‑out. Under the guidance of the Project Manager, deputy project management tasks—such as subcontractor coordination, invoice review, progress report preparation, and tracking of schedules, hours, and budgets across the team—will also be completed.
- Act as Environmental Compliance Coordinator/Deputy Project Manager on multiple projects, reviewing and interpreting project plans and permits, scheduling and staffing surveyors, monitors, and technical experts, and coordinating compliance with clients, contractors, and resource agencies.
- Work closely with the project manager, clients, contractors, and internal staff on permitting strategies and compliance concerns requiring solutions, proactive planning, and adaptation.
- Prepare and provide senior review of technical memorandums, environmental permitting documents, compliance forms and reports, and other technical reports.
- Support Project Manager in deputy project management functions, including team oversight, administrative tasks, budget tracking and allocation, and invoice review.
- Ability to travel out of town overnight for occasional, infrequent field visits to a project site.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Land Use Planning, or a related field.
- 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalence of experience and/or education as an Environmental Compliance Monitor and/or Coordinator on projects involving regulatory compliance, preconstruction surveys, and construction monitoring for a variety of environmental resources.
- Valid U.S. Driver’s license.
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Master’s degree in biology, ecology, project management/control, or related fields.
- 10+ years of relevant work experience on projects involving regulatory compliance, preconstruction surveys, and construction monitoring for a variety of environmental resources.
- Familiarity with permit application requirements and typical challenges and strategies related to environmental permitting and construction compliance.
- Knowledge of and experience with the California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act.
- Experience preparing preconstruction and post‑construction reports and deliverables.
- Experience as a task lead or Project Manager, including managing staff and budgets.
- Experience completing data quality review of compliance and field survey data.
- Prior experience in a client‑facing role.
- Prior working experience with regulatory agencies having jurisdiction over special‑status species and hydrologic resources.
- Experience with or exposure to stormwater management/SWPPP monitoring.
