About
The Role
Integrating a complex sensing & computing system into a compact, attractive & functional wearable form factor requires significant mechanical expertise. The PDE must drive or influence all aspects of development, including system architecture, mechanical form/architecture, thermal design/test, component & vendor selection/evaluation, prototyping roadmaps and execution, along with test & calibration.
The ideal candidate has experience owning wearable electronics design, strong prototyping skills, knowledge of materials and fabrication, good aesthetics, exposure to image sensor and battery integration, and the ability to collaborate across domains.
We are a small team working on very ambitious projects. In a fast-paced startup, everyone must be comfortable, collaborative, decisive, and able to achieve results with limited supervision.
Initial responsibilities: own mechanical architecture & design for all wearable hardware work streams. Identify and onboard design and fabrication partners. Define and bring up the ME tool flow. Prioritize and drive explorations to solve integration challenges.
Responsibilities
- Architect, design, simulate, prototype, and ship mechanical systems and components in wearable form factors.
- Generate models, drawings, simulations, and specifications to support internal and external partners in the design and manufacture of mechanical components.
- Mechanical subject-matter-expert supporting efficient collaboration with Electrical, Firmware, , and soft goods experts to solve complex integration problems.
- Primary point of contact for identifying, evaluating,g and directing materials and fabrication partners.
- Travel as needed for product or prototype development.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant work experience with product design.
- 5+ years of relevant work experience with wearable product design.
- Experience with complex electromechanical integration, including sensors, batteries, antennas, audio systems, in very small form factors.
- Working knowledge in material properties, such as plastics, metal, adhesive, and glass.
- Experience shipping products in a lead or principal engineer role.
- Expert with Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools & mechanical simulation tools.
- Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing techniques (stamping, machining, 3D printing, injection molding, etc).
- BS or MS in ME or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 10+ years of experience in a consumer electronics company
- In-depth knowledge in one or more areas within Product Design
- Experience shipping wearable electronics with significant /Cosmetic constraints
