Professional Mechanical Engineer involving engineering design, construction and alteration of electrical, mechanical, gaseous and liquid systems in buildings, facilities, and other structures. Includes new construction, major alterations and maintenance of physical plant facilities, and civil, electrical and mechanical specialties.
Job SummaryUses skills as a seasoned engineering professional to operate independently in a professional specialized engineering phase of major construction projects, performing design engineering work for projects of limited scope, and/or improving the design of physical plant engineering systems. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Engineering this engineer independently performs design, specification and submittal reviews for large and small scale new and retrofit projects.
Also responsible for in‑house mechanical and plumbing design for renovation and renewal projects under Facilities Services, consulting on facilities operations, mechanical and plumbing system master planning, and optimizing operational efficiencies of HVACR, central plant and distribution systems. Will consult energy, controls and commissioning teams, update campus design guidelines and standards, and develop cost estimates, as‑builts, and descriptive summaries for infrastructure, renewal and deferred maintenance projects.
Overview
The Facilities Services Department (FS) commits to creating a campus physical environment supporting research, teaching, health care and community service. FS has over 465 professional staff and manages substantial operating and capital funds to maintain and renew UCSF facilities.
Responsibilities- Serve as Senior Project Mechanical Engineer for major construction projects, including new construction or major alterations.
- Provide mechanical engineering expertise for design of campus renewal projects, small to medium deferred maintenance, energy and water conservation projects.
- Act as engineering liaison to coordinate communications between chief architects, engineers and engineering staff.
- Provide engineering analysis supporting recommended system upgrades or modifications.
- Review engineering design development and construction documents to ensure compliance with programs, policies and UCSF Facilities Design Standards.
- Ensure project records are documented and transferred to University Space Management Team.
- Improve design, operation and maintenance of mechanical, plumbing and utility systems in the physical plant.
- Advise committees of occupants on building needs and priorities for limited‑scope projects.
- Design mechanical systems for lab renovation and equipment/utility installations.
- Serve as physical plant engineer for specialized aspects of the physical planning and construction program.
- Support project engineering activities for small construction projects and provide engineering support for new construction or major alterations.
- Provide engineering peer reviews and guide lower‑level engineers.
- Work with field personnel to identify and solve operational problems.
- Consult Facilities Services Units as needed.
- Conduct utilities capacity reviews and support preventive maintenance programs.
- Perform field investigations, engineering research, and analysis to support facilities investment needs and capital improvement programs.
- Prepare reports with recommendations, including cost estimates, to improve campus infrastructure.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience and training.
- Minimum 5+ years of related experience.
- 5 years of experience designing research laboratories, vivariums, or similar facilities.
- 1‑3 years of facilities operations/support experience.
- Proficiency in computerized and manual HVAC analysis, including AutoCAD MEP.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrate a professional attitude.
- Experience with HVACR design for research labs, vivariums and biosafety labs.
- Knowledge of plumbing, central plants, mechanical distribution systems and DDC controls.
