Specifications Director

HMC is in search of an experienced Specifications Director to augment our team in any of our six office locations (Los Angeles, Ontario, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, or San Jose).
The Specifications Director is responsible for preparing the project specification for multiple complex projects through all phases of project development. Reviews, selects and develop appropriate technical specifications.
Establishes and maintain budgets, schedules, and monitor adherence of terms of the design contract relative to Project Specifications. Possess strong ability to multi-task and prioritize different types of projects and project size.
Possess the ability to supervise 2 - 3 specification writers and to oversee the technical staff.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor of Architecture, Bachelor of Science in Architecture or Engineering Degree highly recommended.
- Architectural License in State of California highly recommended.
- Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) and Construction Documents Technician (CDT) preferred. Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA) preferred. Membership in CSI preferred.
- Ten years of office and field experience involving administration of large projects and experience in reviewing multi-disciplinary technical Specifications (architectural, structural, MP &E).
- LEED Certification preferred.
Communication and Collaboration
- Review drawings and technical information to develop the technical Specifications in collaboration with the Project Team.
- Ability to communicate verbally, and in writing with the project team, support staff, vendors in a clear, concise manner.
- Listens and communicates effectively and professionally.
- Diligently pursues solutions with project team when project issues are unclear.
- Collaborate with Project Team to meet goals and project objectives.
- Coordinates with consultants to resolve issues related to consultants’ work.
- Participate in project marketing interviews when requested.
- Author technical articles for publication in Architectural or construction industry.
- Assist the firm in developing training materials for technical seminars.
- Meets and assists the PICs and Project Managers in resolving technical problems.
- Always be professional and respectful in interactions with client, consultants and staff.
Supervision and Delegation
- Ability to delegate assignments to support staff.
- Always conduct supervisory responsibilities in a respectful way.
- Support Director of Technical Services in supervision and delegation of work.
- Be primary source for monitoring staff performance on a daily basis and taking the appropriate action to report both positive and negative performance.
- Prepare evaluations and meet with staff to discuss the evaluation.
Documentation
- Assist PICs and senior managers in preparing RFPs relative to technical issues.
- Reviews contract and Contracts for Construction.
- Prepare Project Summaries, Outline Specifications, edit master specifications and complete the 3-Part CSI Specifications.
- Develop new technical specifications sections addressing new products or new methods of construction
Business Development
- Assist the PICs and project managers in arriving at fees in preparing RFP's as they relate to developing the Project Specifications.
- Conduct technical seminars and workshops.
- Pursue involvement in technical associations.
- Ability to market Technical Services capabilities through client interviews and presentations.
Management
- Demonstrate motivation in seeking new responsibilities and challenges.
