Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Battery Energy Storage Project Developer to lead the identification, evaluation, and development of distribution-level battery energy storage projects from conception through to ready‑to‑build status. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the energy storage market, regulatory landscapes, project finance, and the technical aspects of BESS deployment. This role requires a strong entrepreneurial spirit, exceptional negotiation skills, and the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities
  • Market Analysis & Site Identification
    • Conduct in-depth market research to identify attractive regions and interconnection opportunities for utility‑scale battery energy storage projects.
    • Proactively identify and evaluate potential project sites, considering interconnection feasibility, land availability, permitting requirements, and local community impact.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with landowners, utilities, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Project Feasibility & Due Diligence
    • Perform comprehensive due diligence on potential sites, including title research, environmental assessments, and geotechnical investigations.
    • Conduct initial technical and financial feasibility studies to assess project viability, including preliminary system sizing, cost estimation, and revenue projections.
    • Collaborate with engineering and technical teams to optimize project layouts and designs.
  • Permitting & Interconnection
    • Manage and lead all aspects of the project permitting process, including securing local, state, and federal permits (e.g., land use, environmental, building permits).
    • Navigate the utility interconnection process, including submitting applications, managing interconnection agreements, and addressing technical requirements.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with permitting authorities and utility representatives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Community Relations
    • Act as the primary point of contact for external stakeholders, including landowners, local communities, government officials, and regulatory bodies.
    • Lead community outreach efforts and address local concerns to ensure project acceptance and support.
  • Commercial & Financial Modeling
    • Develop and refine financial models to evaluate project economics, conduct sensitivity analyses, and support investment decisions.
    • Assist in securing project financing, including working with internal finance teams and external investors.
    • Support off‑take negotiations (e.g., PPA, tolling agreements) for energy, capacity, and ancillary services.
  • Risk Management
    • Identify and mitigate project risks throughout the development lifecycle, including technical, regulatory, environmental, and financial risks.
    • Develop and implement strategies to overcome development challenges.
  • Project Management & Reporting
    • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure projects advance efficiently and meet development milestones.
    • Prepare regular project status reports for internal stakeholders and senior management.
    • Transition projects smoothly to the execution/EPC team upon achieving ready‑to‑build status.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Finance, Environmental Science, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in renewable energy project development, with a strong focus on solar or battery energy storage systems.
  • Proven track record of successfully developing and permitting complex energy projects.
  • Deep understanding of the battery energy storage market, technologies, and value streams.
  • Strong knowledge of utility interconnection processes, regulatory frameworks (FERC, ISO/RTOs), and state/local permitting requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with land acquisition, lease negotiation, and real estate due diligence.
  • Proficiency in financial modeling and project valuation.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to project sites and stakeholder meetings.
Preferred Skills (Nice‑to‑Haves)
  • Experience with GIS mapping tools.
  • Understanding of power market dynamics and energy trading.
  • Previous experience working for a developer, utility, or independent power producer.
What We Offer
