Senior Electronics Engineering Associate

The Engineering Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) provides advanced technical expertise and multidisciplinary engineering solutions to support groundbreaking scientific discovery. Within the division's Electronics, Software, and Instrumentation Engineering department, team members design, build, and support sophisticated technical systems for national user facilities and complex research projects.
The Senior Electronics Engineering Associate provides advanced technical expertise and independent technical ownership for the design, implementation, integration, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, and modernization of complex electrical, electronic, control, instrumentation, and related technical systems supporting the Advanced Light Source (ALS), Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U), and other Engineering Division projects.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility that produces exceptionally bright soft and hard x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light. With a strong scientific reputation, expert staff, and advanced capabilities, the ALS attracts thousands of academic and industrial users each year in condensed matter and quantum materials, energy sciences, biosciences, earth and planetary sciences and more.

The ALS is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve 15,000 users annually. Co-located with the Molecular Foundry, NERSC supercomputing center, and Berkeley Lab's materials, chemical sciences, biosciences, and other divisions, it provides an ideal collaborative environment for innovative scientific discoveries.

The ALS is a global leader in soft x-ray science, and aims to maintain its leadership with ALS-U, a major project to upgrade the facility to a fourth-generation light source. This upgrade will position the facility among the brightest soft x-ray light sources in the world, offering capabilities that no other facility can provide.

You will:

  • Independently lead complex technical assignments, systems, projects, and work packages from planning through implementation, testing, commissioning, documentation, and closeout.
  • Apply advanced technical expertise to the design, integration, operation, troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, modification, and modernization of electrical, electronic, control, instrumentation, and related systems.
  • Translate engineering requirements and project objectives into practical designs, work packages, installation requirements, test procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Select appropriate methods, tools, components, equipment, and technical solutions based on requirements, safety, reliability, maintainability, compatibility, lifecycle, and applicable standards.
  • Develop, interpret, review, and maintain schematics, wiring diagrams, one-lines, cable documentation, layouts, specifications, procedures, and as-built records.
  • Perform technical investigations, field evaluations, testing, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis to resolve complex technical issues and improve system performance and reliability.
  • Support fabrication, installation, integration, commissioning, startup, maintenance, modification, inspection, and acceptance activities.
  • Coordinate technical activities with engineers, Engineering Associates, technicians, trades personnel, scientists, project managers, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Support procurement through technical specifications, equipment requirements, vendor evaluations, submittals, inspections, and acceptance activities.
  • Monitor technical scope, schedules, deliverables, interfaces, risks, quality, and implementation issues, escalating concerns and coordinating additional expertise when needed.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and mentoring to less experienced technical personnel.
  • Identify and implement improvements to technical processes, documentation, reliability, maintainability, safety, and project execution.
  • Apply Laboratory requirements, codes, standards, engineering practices, work-control processes, and applicable electrical and safety requirements.

Requirements:

  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible professional experience in electrical/electronics engineering, engineering technology, system integration, instrumentation, controls, or a related discipline.
