Job Description & How to Apply Below

Abstract is a growing venture capital firm based in San Francisco with over $2 billion in assets under management. We are sector-agnostic and invest in seed and early-stage companies. Our team partners closely with founders to build category-defining businesses. As we scale, we are building out our internal finance function to complement our fund administrator and support the firm’s increasing operational complexity.

Role Overview

We are seeking a full-time Assistant Controller to join the firm and work directly with the CFO. This is a high-impact, hands‑on role that spans fund accounting, management company accounting, and broader finance and operations. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, has meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively. This is a great opportunity to join a fast-growing investment firm and make an immediate impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and review quarterly/annual financial statements, audits, tax returns, and regulatory filings.
  • Update portfolio company valuations in accordance with Abstract’s valuation policy.
  • Serve as primary liaison with service providers (fund administrator, audit, and tax teams).
  • Process and review transactions related to fund investments and expenses.
  • Monitor banking activity and process/review wires, capital calls/distributions, and line-of-credit requests.
  • Maintain complete, well-organized accounting documentation and internal controls.
  • Partner with the investment team on ad-hoc analyses and projects.
  • Assist with accounts payable and expense management.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Support LP reporting and fundraising efforts as needed.
Qualifications
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and professionalism.
  • Proactive ownership mindset with strong follow-through.
  • Comfortable operating independently and managing multiple, evolving priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience with at least 2-3 years of venture capital, private equity or fund administration experience.
