The team advises on consumer and commercial lending, bank partnership arrangements, and the regulatory relationships that underpin them, working closely with business partners to ensure Block's lending products meet the highest standards of legal and regulatory compliance.

Block is looking for a highly engaged regulatory counsel with experience advising on state and federal lending laws, including navigation of bank partnership issues. This role will serve as a subject matter expert on consumer and commercial lending regulation, lead resolution of complex, cross‑functional regulatory and bank partnership issues, and act as a trusted advisor to senior business, product, and compliance stakeholders as Block continues to build and scale novel consumer financial products.

You Will
  • Provide legal and regulatory advice on our products to members of the Counsel team and business partners on lending regs, including Reg Z, Reg B, Fair Lending, and state lending licensing regulations
  • Act as a subject matter expert for and advise on legal, regulatory, and industry requirements for consumer and commercial lending, bank partnership arrangements, model risk management and related financial services activities
  • Lead resolution of complex, cross‑functional regulatory and bank partnership issues, exercising independent judgment in evaluating risk, trade‑offs, and escalation paths
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior business, product, compliance, and bank partner stakeholders, translating legal and regulatory risk into clear, actionable guidance
  • Summarize and analyze the impact of new and evolving rules and regulations, and proactively flag implications for the business
  • Provide legal support and strategic input on emerging and novel consumer financial products, helping shape product development from concept through launch
You Have
  • 8+ years of experience at a law firm (with lending advisory experience), a financial services regulatory agency, in a bank partnership role, or in‑house
  • Substantive experience with lending and bank partnership issues/relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead and drive complex legal and regulatory issues to resolution
  • Experience engaging directly with senior stakeholders across legal, compliance, product, and business teams
  • Experience with emerging or novel consumer financial products preferred
  • Experience with Fin Tech, lending, and bank partnership relationships; experience at a tech company or in fintech preferred
  • High degree of comfort and fluency with technology, and understanding of how technology is applied to business and regulatory problems
  • JD and an active membership and good standing with the Bar of resident state and/or the California Bar or New York Bar
