Finance Operations Associate and Finance Operations Lead About Coefficient Giving

Coefficient Giving (formerly Open Philanthropy) is a philanthropic funder and advisor. Since 2014, we’ve directed over $5 billion in grants as part of our mission to help others as much as we can with the resources available to us. We work with a range of donors who share our commitment to cost-effective, high-impact giving. Our current funds include Science and Global Health R&D, Navigating Transformative AI, Abundance & Growth, Farm Animal Welfare, Biosecurity & Pandemic Preparedness, and more.

In 2025, we recommended more than $1 billion to high-impact causes.

We’re proud of our track record:

  • We jump-started the field of AI safety and security and have played a vital role in addressing other existential threats, such as mirror bacteria.

  • Our grants to evidence-backed global health programs have saved over 100,000 lives, and our farm animal welfare grants have improved the lives of over 3 billion animals.

  • We supported late-stage clinical trials for the R21 malaria vaccine, now being scaled to protect millions of kids globally.

  • We were the earliest major funder of the YIMBY movement to build more housing. Our grantees have led the charge on major wins like City of Yes in New York, and SB 79 in California, which will enable hundreds of thousands of new housing units

About the roles

We are hiring multiple new team members to help us scale Coefficient Giving’s finance operations as the organization continues to grow. We’re aiming to hire 3-5 people at the Finance Operations Associate level and one person at the Finance Operations Lead level. Candidates for either level are encouraged to apply; prior experience, as well as performance in our evaluation process, will inform which level is the best fit.

Both the finance operations associate and the finance operations lead will own a combination of core finance operations work and special projects, spending roughly half their time in each area. The finance operations lead will assume ownership of more complex finance work streams and may eventually be a people manager.

In either role, your portfolio will be shaped by your unique strengths and expertise, though we expect all successful candidates to be comfortable continuously learning new tools, processes, and areas of finance and accounting.

Core finance operations responsibilities include:

  • Finance inbox management: Help manage our shared finance inbox, including processing invoices, troubleshooting finance-related questions from staff and contractors, and coordinating with other teams on collaborative projects.

  • Accounts payable: Support day-to-day management of our AP process, including collection of relevant information and paperwork to ensure a smooth experience for our vendors and internal stakeholders.

  • Expense review: Review staff expenses for accuracy, policy compliance, and alignment with IRS accountable plan rules.

  • Period-end close: Contribute to month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations (bank, credit card, payroll, expenses), balance sheet analysis, and schedules for prepaid expenses and fixed assets.

  • Contractor onboarding: Onboard Coefficient Giving contractors, and continually look for ways to improve the contractor process.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of finance processes, policies, and procedures to support efficient operations and continuity.

Finance operations special projects vary significantly in scope and subject, but may include:

  • Tools and systems implementation: Take a new finance tool from evaluation > purchase > implementation > documentation > steady-state.

  • International entity build-out and consolidation: Set up new international entities, coordinate with external accounting partners abroad, and contribute to our multi-entity consolidation process.

  • Internal controls and risks: Strengthen our internal control framework as the organization’s footprint grows across jurisdictions.

  • Audit and tax compliance: Collaborate with our external tax and audit partners to assist with preparing tax returns and annual audits as needed.

  • Payroll and benefits: Support payroll…
