The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) administers programs that account for about twenty-three percent of all state revenue. The department is focused on sales and use tax, as well as special taxes and fees, and offers employees reliable income, stable benefits, work‑life balance, paid holidays, advancement opportunities, and the personal fulfillment of making a meaningful impact on Californians’ lives.

Under close supervision of the Supervising Tax Auditor, the Tax Auditor (TA) conducts the least to moderately difficult field audits, fraud/tax evasion audits, and other related tasks. The TA audits accounts, attends basic tax law and audit training classes, makes audit appointments, meets with taxpayers and their representatives, explains audit findings, assists in identifying interrelated fraud schemes, may testify in court on liabilities determined, and prepares appropriate audit reports and written correspondence to taxpayers.

This position is designated as a mobile worker; the incumbent will spend at least fifty percent (50%) of the time working at various locations other than their home or office in a single day and is required to travel at least fifty percent (50%) of the time, including overnight travel. The position may be eligible for Recruitment Hiring Above Minimum (HAM) salary rate of $5,367 per month (Range A only) effective October 1, 2024, and may qualify for partial telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible candidates residing in California.

All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change.
