Essential Duties
  • Prepare for work; receive instruction from platoon commander regarding assignment (beat) and/or specific patrol targets during daily line‑up; inspect patrol car, equipment and weapons to ensure proper operation.
  • Patrol the district on foot or in patrol car; operate Mobile Video Terminal computer; operate radio; detect criminal activity; and communicate with the public.
  • Respond to call for service; resolve disputes; admonish individuals; respond to accidents; and provide emergency first‑aid.
  • Conduct investigations; conduct a preliminary investigation at the scene of a crime; search area for suspects or evidence; interview suspects, witnesses and victims; obtain case numbers; and obtain background information from dispatch or the computer.
  • Promote community policing; speak to merchants regarding potential problems in the area; explain laws, ordinances, and rights to citizens; attend community meetings; and participate in community‑based programs.
  • Make arrests and/or detain suspects.
  • Pursue suspects; chase suspects; set up perimeters; and communicate with partner to coordinate chase.
  • Enforce traffic and parking violations.
  • Write reports; keep records; draw accident scene diagrams; complete forms and maintain logs.
  • Interact with superiors, peers, and other department personnel.
  • Prepare and participate in planned events; stand and direct traffic at accident scenes, demonstrations, or planned events; control crowds; cooperate with other city and state agencies to secure area at planned event or crime scene.
  • Prepare for and attend court; review reports and related documents; testify in court; meet with the Assistant District Attorney to discuss cases.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education
      : U.S. High School Graduate, or have passed a G.E.D., California High School Proficiency Examination, or have an AA or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Age
      :
      At least 20 years old when applying, 21 by appointment.
    • Driver’s License
      :
      Possess a valid driver’s license to operate an automobile throughout the selection process.
    • Judicial Record
      :
      No felony conviction; no domestic violence offense; no firearm‑related misdemeanors; not restricted from employment with the City and County of San Francisco.
    Desired Qualifications
    • Experience in the United States Military.
    • Proficiency in a second language relevant to San Francisco communities.
