Environmental Health Inspector - Consumer Protection (6120) - Citywide

The 6120 Consumer Protection Environmental Health Inspector conducts inspections to enforce health, housing, and environmental safety codes and to protect public health. The role involves inspecting housing, industrial facilities and premises, solid waste facilities and vehicles, noise sources, fixed and mobile food facilities, and other public health hazards; recommending actions to remedy violations; issuing citations; preparing reports; implementing environmental health programs;

and performing related duties as required.

Responsibilities
  • Enforce provisions of health, housing, planning, air pollution codes, state health and safety laws, and local ordinances; may specialize in related activities as needed.
  • Investigate complaints involving buildings, abate illegal health, sanitary, and safety conditions, and coordinate enforcement with city departments; testify in hearings or court as required.
  • Conduct complaint inspections of dwellings and multiple dwellings, assess sanitation, maintenance, safety, occupancy, and code compliance; issue notices and follow up on corrections; prepare condemnation reports when applicable; testify at condemnation hearings.
  • Perform noise source inspections, prepare legal notices of violations, and recommend corrective actions; prepare cases for hearings.
  • Inspect food and beverage establishments for compliance with sanitary requirements; collect samples for laboratory analyses; conduct foodborne illness investigations; issue permits or suspend/revoke permits as needed; testify at hearings.
  • Conduct miscellaneous inspections of facilities (e.g., laundry establishments, elder care facilities, animal boarding) and assist with hazardous materials surveys and water quality-related activities as required.
Qualifications
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License.
  • California Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) certification or eligibility and ability to submit certificate.
  • Knowledge of environmental health sciences, relevant legal requirements, inspection procedures, and the ability to communicate effectively, manage time, and utilize technology.
Selection and Terms

Selection procedures include a Training and Experience Evaluation. Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in this evaluation. The eligible list is typically valid for 12 months. Additional selection steps may be conducted prior to hiring. Civil service rules apply.
