Nature of Work
Inspections are performed primarily at off-site locations and may require a moderate degree of physical exertion including lifting and carrying up to fifty (50) pounds; bending; stooping; climbing; crouching; reaching; kneeling; and manual dexterity.
Under general supervision, class 6220 Inspector of Weights and Measures inspects and tests weighing and measuring devices, petroleum products, and packaged commodities for labeled content and retail price verification inspections; carries out, interprets, and enforces policies and procedures relative to inspection activities; regularly explains applicable laws, policies, rules and regulations to employees, businesses, and the public; and maintains records and prepares reports on inspection activities.
The 6220 Inspector of Weights and Measures performs essential duties including, but not limited to the following:
- Investigates complaints concerning illegal weights and measures practices;
- Conducts field tests of various weighing and measuring devices;
- Inspects pre-packaged meats and other packaged commodities;
- Enforces state and county laws related to weights and measures by issuing warning notices and citations;
- Takes samples of gasoline and other petroleum products;
- Answers questions from the general public related to weights and measures; serves as a source of information and maintains good public relations;
- Assists with annually calibrating all field standards and on-the-job training; and
- Writes daily inspection reports and investigative reports, as required by law.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

Knowledge of- Weighing and measuring devices refers to the construction, maintenance, and operations of scales, meters, standards of weights and measures, and other devices used in field work in the marketplace
- State and local laws pertaining to weights and measures as described in the Business and Professions Code and the California Administrative Code.
- Inspect weighing and measuring devices to inspect and test weighing and measuring devices for accuracy within established tolerance limits and for compliance with specifications and requirements
- Use proper investigative techniques to gather facts, analyze situations to note precise measures and quantities accurately and expediently, and take appropriate enforcement actions
