Under the direction of the /Supervisor, transports patients to various areas of the Medical Center and/or operates as patient transport dispatcher. Also responsible for transporting patient equipment and various other patient related paraphernalia in a 24-hour operation, 7 days a week. Incumbent will complete all tasks following departmental guidelines and University policies and procedures. Work in unison with dispatchers, supervisors, and management to perform at a standard which is acceptable by the department of Patient Transportation Services.
D Areas of Emphasis:
Percentage of time spent (70%)
Transport patients to various areas of the hospital via gurney, bed, crib or wheelchair.
Follows Department Standard Work for
Transport patients using a free-flow oxygen device such as a mask, cannula,
Aerosols and croquettes.
Transport isolation patients, using appropriate attire for patient movement.
Assist a licensed nurse in connecting and disconnecting traction equipment.
Assist a licensed nurse transport RN in transporting patients with I.V. pumps, telemetry, CPO, trachs.
Assist a licensed nurse with the movement of I.V. pumps from a bed to a wheelchair /gurney- with an I.V. pole.
Provide appropriate age assessment and interventions in order to meet the needs of patients and families served
Deliver and pick-up specimens, blood, medical equipment, medical records,
Medications, and various other items from one area to another as required or assigned within the Center for Health Sciences (CHS).
Work with patient escorts, nursing staff, physicians, patients, and other hospital personnel.
Keep the department supervisor or manager abreast of problems encountered or unusual situations.
Maintain Departmental equipment & retrieve unused equipment (wheelchairs, gurneys, 02 tanks, etc.) and return them to the Transport Department
Adhere to Policies & Procedures:

Report any equipment malfunctions to supervisors ASAP
Display a professional attitude as well as a neat appearance at all times.
Follows established department and hospital guidelines for attendance and tardiness.
Adheres to all hospital and department policies and procedures. Remains current on patient safety to include electrical, mechanical, fire, safety and disaster procedures.
Provides excellent customer service to patients, co-workers, physicians and other departments.
Assures that work environment is clean and in compliance with infection control and environmental health and safety standards.
Is a role model by maintaining a professional, neat appearance and adhering to the department dress code policy Displays hospital identification badge
Calls, keep dispatcher informed of status of calls
Check patient's I.D. band & chart before transport
Obtains necessary signatures prior to transport to ensure patient identity
Development:
Percentage of time spent (3%)
Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice. Attends assigned staff development activities.
Participates in cross training activities when necessary.
Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned.
Attends meetings or seminars to remain current.
Comply with the department's expectation s and standards
Performance Improvement:
Percentage of time spent (3%)
Participate in related performance improvement projects for the department and hospital.
Attendances required hospital training and in-services.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of six months relevant work experience.
- Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively within a team.
- Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description.
- Willingness to be taught/learn new skills.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction).
- Ability to organize and effectively set priorities.
- Ability to carry out duties of first responder in emergency situations.
- Basic computer skills.

- Previous experience as a patient transporter
