Position: ML Research Scientist (Health & Sensing)
Overview

Machine Learning Research Scientist (Health & Sensing) at Eight Sleep. We are seeking researchers passionate about using AI & ML to transform sensor data into personalized intelligent health & fitness experiences. The role involves working with heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep, and other metrics to drive data-driven health outcomes, in collaboration with a cross-functional R&D and production team.

Responsibilities

• Work on projects such as:
- Autopilot Thermoregulation:
Advance the Pod’s adaptive thermoregulation system, designing policies that optimize comfort and sleep quality in real time through reinforcement learning and closed-loop control.
- Health Foundation Modeling:
Develop a multimodal health foundation model integrating physiology and environmental context using Pod signals, wearable sensors, and contextual data, leveraging large-scale sleep data.

• Develop behavioral simulations:
Build a high-fidelity physiological simulator that models how daily behaviors affect sleep and readiness, creating an always-on model of healthy aging from Pod biosignals and continuous physiological data.

What You'll Need To Succeed

• Expertise in at least one area of machine learning and artificial intelligence (e.g., self-supervised learning, multi-modal ML, model optimization, NLP, LLM)

• Strong interest in applying ML to health-related problems and data

• Experience programming (Python, C/C++ or similar) to manipulate data, extract insights, and train ML models

• 3+ years of practical ML experience solving real-world problems or relevant quantitative/qualitative research and analytics experience

• PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, Mathematics, or related quantitative field with publications; or BS/MS with publications at top venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, CVPR, ICCV, ACL, EMNLP, INTERSPEECH)
